When I push on the gas, I hear a whining/whiring noise and I'm not sure why... The sound has suddenly appeared about 2 weeks ago and I dont hear it when I am in park or when i reverse. Also, it gets more intense when I accellerate more, but only when my foot is pressing on the gas. Anyone know what it could be? any suggestions? A friend of mine said it may be a vibrating heat sheild or the like??? Doesnt seem to be affecting the performance of my car...
If it is a vibrating noise (like pouring pebbles into a tin pie plate), then it could be one of the many heat shields found on the car.If it is a rubbing noise which increases with speed, it could be the constant velocity joint (the inner and outer rubber CV boots get cuts and allow dirt to penetrate; once dirt is in, it begins to degrade the CV joint).
Do you hear the sound at all speeds, or lower speeds? When my defroster is on, I now have a whining/whirling noise at slower speeds. I can turn the defroster off, and it does not make the noise. I am not sure what it is, but I will need to have it looked at before my warranty expires. I have also noticed that in this cold weather, mine never idles down below 1100 rpms. That is kind of annoying.
If it is a CV joint, the noise should also get louder when you are turning. If it is really bad you will hear a clack, clack, clack sound when turning sharply at very slow speed.
I've just noticed both constant-velocity joints are getting noisy (mild rubbing noise) at about 55,000 miles in my '03. The noise is noticeable with either a right or left turn, so I'm assuming it's both CV's, not just one.Anyone else replaced CV's? Did you do it yourself (aftermarket) or go to a dealer?
My 2003 Vibe Base Auto 2-tone Salsa "SalsaWagon" was built in May 2002. I acquired it in Feb 2004/Traded it in on a 2016 Honda HR-V in Feb 2018.
It sounds like the same problem that I have my Vibe.On mine its the resonator thats making the sound. The dealer said I need to replace the whole cat assembly to replace the resonator,I have been fighting with GM to get them to replace it since you can not buy a resonator by itself and the cat is a warranty part ,its like 1,000 bucks to get the whloe thing replaced.I hopethis helps.

Well,I guess the GM tech was wrong it wasn't the resonator .because I had it changed( it only cost 720 not the 1000 I was quoted before)and it still made that sound so now I have to bring back the car on Monday so that another tech can look at it.Will keep you informd.
