GPS unit for Vibe ( non-factory )

I don't have Navigation on my Vibe but I am interested in having that, so I am looking at a couple of options here...( Preferably something that talks in a nice female voice and has very detailed directions )1. Garmin StreetPilot http://www.garmin.com/products...x.jsp#2. PDA + GPS moduleI used to own a Ipaq 3970, so I am somewhat partial to PDAs, plus there's BlueTooth GPS units now and I happen to be a big fan of BT heheIf you have other suggestions, please do share.thank you

I use an iPaq 2215 with a Socket Bluetooth GPS. The iPaq is held by a ProClip dash mount made for the Vibe/Matrix. The software is Mapopolis Navigator. I *REALLY WISH* my car had the built-in, but I wanted a sunroof even more and I think my setup is the next best thing.

that sounds good. I opted out of the in-car Nav because I want it to be portable, plus, there's no map for my home town.Do you have pics ?How much did you pay for the GPS unit ?thanks

The GPS was $150 from TechDepot via Amazon It comes with a car cord but no AC charger. I get about six hours on a charge, and sat aquisition is pretty good. I'll take some pics and post tomorrow

If I ever had the money to switch to a full-on Pioneer system, i'd sell my Factory NAV (yes, with the AUX in adapter and the changer)..

thanks for the pic, FusionVGTI am leaning towards that set up as well.Do you store your maps in a SD card ? I've read that SD card sometimes interferes with BT connection and BT connection breaks due to SD card uage.-----joatmon. thanks for the link but the installation is way out of my league ( possibly my dealer as well ). So it'd hardly be economically feasible for me to go that route.The huge screen sure is nice though...

I am convinced that SD cards do not read/write data as fast as CF cards. I put the maps on the CF card and the problem went away. The loss of connection to the GPS when using SD cards only happened when I neeed to switch from one map to another.

But..it wouldn't be as easy as the PocketPC route...

I've got a Handera 330 (Palm OS device discontinued) and a Rand McNally Palm III GPS (also discontinued, bought at staples about a year ago for $20, Ebay usually have many of these). I use Mapopolis for maps and CetusGPS for Speed/Compass. I can't find the link for Cetus right now, but have it at work and can post it if people are interested. I've been thinking about getting a GPS for my new handheld (Sony NX-60) and running the same software, but can't decide if spending the $200 is worth it just for a color version of what I have now

I use my laptop in my vehicle for GPS. I use the DeLorme Street Atlas software in my computer with an external GPS hooked up to it. I think it only costed me like $120 USD at Best Buy for the software and hardware. It's not bad having GPS on a 15 inch screen for that cheap of price.

Yeah, 15" sure is nice.A friend has a TPC on his car for GPS... wow!Anyway, I am aiming for spring or summer to get a GPS.I am most likely going to get a iPAQ 1940 ( possibly 2210 ) with a LeadTek 9537 BT GPSJust imagine how wonderful my vacation will be this year...hehehe

I have the SPIII deluxe from Garmin that I switch back and forth between the Vibe and my Impala. It's a great unit and I wouldn't think of going on a trip without it.If I was going to buy one now I think I would go with their new one, the 2610. My SPIII will only hold 128 meg worth of maps, which will cover quite a large area, but the 2610 uses CF cards, and with a 2 gig microdrive you can loads maps for the complete United States.The only thing I wish is the lighter in the Vibe would stay hot all the time. My Impala does, but with the vibe every time you shut the engine off you have to make sure you shut the GPS off.

It would be pretty simple to rewire your lighter socket to make it come straight off of the battery. If it was really a concern, then it would definitely be worth it. Sometimes it's the little things that make the difference...I wish I had GPS

I've thought about rewiring the lighter but just haven't got around to getting to it.I don't have any problem with doing the rewiring as I was an industrial electrician for 30 years, but sometimes the hardest part of automotive wiring is figuring out the best way to get at the wiring. Maybe someone that has already done it could save me some time by giving me a tip on the best spot to get at the wiring.

Ragingfish has a bunch of posts on wiring. I just got an aux cig lighter that I was going to install behind/underneath the dash. I was planning on tapping into the fuse box, just haven't decided which fuse to use yet. If you have a multimeter, it wouldn't take much to rewire to constant +12 behind the radio. Remove the panel around the shifter (thus the cigarette lighter), and run a wire from the back of the radio to the lighter.But yes, ragingfish can probably give you a more exact account of that..
