xm roady

Post by threekrows »

Installed an xm roady receiver in my booger green machine last weekend.Install went pretty smooth.I went with the fm modulator b/c I still use the factory h/u(6-cd indash)I was impressed with the fact that they made the wiring plenty long enough,I put the antenna on the roof in the back and ran the wiring along the headliner.I couldn't find a good place to mount the receiver,so I ran my wiring to the little cubbyhole below the shifter, and have the cubby open with the unit sitting on top of it.Worked well, just have to watch where you're going when changing channels.I picked the roady because it is smaller than the skyfi unit and the antenna is smaller too.It has some neat features too.If anyone else has one, where did you mount it?I also saw on the xm site that you get a free home cradle if you buy one.

Ironic ou should post, I'm struggling with the SkyFi/Roady debate right now (just ask NSimkins).I have a SkyFi in my hands, but am disappointed it doesn't have the feature that notifies you when a song you like is playing. On the other hand, the Roady is only a 2 line display, and I like the wheel on the skyfi.Any thoughts? Did you do the skyfi/roady debate yourself? If so, how'd you come to a decision?
YES!I still visit GenVibe periodically. I have not forgotten about my "original" family over here!

Right now I still have the Roady in the Vibe as I like the auto-on feature, as well as the display is MUCH easier to read in daylight. The SkiFi kept getting washed out.I do miss the wheel of the skifi, the channel browsing, and the more info on the display..but the easy-to-readness of the Roady and the auto-on pulled me to the Roady.Granted, I still have my SkiFi to use in my boombox, and in the Grand Am. :D

The commander is -basically- the same unit as the Roady. It behaves the same way, has auto-on, has tuneselect, has the same display (minus the changing colors). If you get the commander, Silver, you'll also need two adapters to make the RF adapter work with the antenna connectors in the Vibe. Metra parts 40-GM10 and 40-GM20. Either the Commander or the Roady are good devices, though..and it's really a personal preference. Although the Roady has no FM modulator available for it yet. In theory, you could use the FM mod for the SkiFi, but it won't work quite right, from what i've heard..

The Commander's RF module has plenty of wire to run from wherever you want.

I think the modulator is the same as the skifi(I've installed a couple)It works fine so far. What kind of problems should I look for?I have used the skifi some, and I like the size, display, and the song memory notification on the roady, plus the free home kit(whenever it gets here)I didn't get the commander because I wanted something simple to remove and put in my 04 sunfire when I drive it somewhere. You can still cruise the stations easy enough on the roady,it just takes getting used to from using the skifi.
