98 GA Suprisingly Fun To Drive....

Post by ragingfish »

So while the Vibe is getting resurrected, I have to drive my dad's 98 GA for the week (or however long the car is in the shop for). As uncomfortable as the car is (amazingly low to the ground, cramped, and noisy), I have to admit, the engine is quite peppy. It's a 3100 SFI V6, and it has a hell of a lot of kick to it! I floored it from a light and was blown away by how fast that damn thing took off. Interestingly, my mom's 00 GP has the same engine (3100 SFI V6), but doesn't have nearly the same response in it. Granted, it has more weight to move, but just in general, it doesn't wanna work. That being said, I'd still like the Vibe back. And I'll keep hoping the dealer will "accidentally" swap the tranny for a stick shift while it's in.

That 3.1 V6 is a nice engine. I had one in my 94 GP, it was the 160 HP version. I think the one in the GA is 150 HP. They had a good amount of torque for the displacement (190 ft/lbs). The 3.8 V6 in my Mustang made 190 HP and 215 lb/ft of torque. My GP was a decent mover, though not "fast" by any means, it was surprisingly quick for its size. Got decent gas mileage also. My stepsister has a 99 or 00 GA with the "3100 H.O. V6" with ram air. I got to drive it before with her husband and it is a surprisingly quick car. Handling is good, but a little soft for my liking. I have to agree that it is rather small/cramped inside for me, but my stepsister is kinda short and petite so it suits her well.

my first car was a 98 GA, 4 cyl 5 spd. it had a surprisingly peppy engine as well, but that was most likely due to the torque, something we lack in the Vibe.

Like our head mechanic at work always says..."there's no replacement for displacement". In general, more displacement = more torque.
