A/C question

I am wondering what's the relationship between the "circulation button " ( the button under A/C and is supposed to have air circulate within the car only ) and "fan position" dial? ( the dial closest to the driver that controls which vents the air are coming out of )I typically have the "circulation" pressed in and whenever I turn the dial from dash vents to window vents the circulation button pops off.Why ?than you

The button with the rotating arrows is the recirculation button. This means that, rather than bring in outside air, the car will continue to circulate air within the cabin. Advantages to this are on very cold or very hot days, it can help the car more quickly heat, or cool off, the cabin, respectively.You should not leave recirculate engaged for too long. It will keep fresh air from entering the car. That's bad. The recirculate button is triggered to disable whenever you engage the front window defroster/defogger. There is a cable behind it that pushes the button to the "Off" position whenever you engage the window defog/defrost mode, the last position on the dial (and possible the second to last, which is bi level).The reason for this is that recirculating air within the car, which is already too damp, will only hinder efforts to clear the window. By bringing in fresh air, it helps reduce the humidity within the car, a large reason for window fogging.Or so I'm told.

I think the only time I have used the recirculate is to turn it on, switch the the air direction control to either bi-level or defrost and watch the recirc button pop back out. I know, it sounds pretty simple minded to amuse oneself in such a way, but I have a really long commute

My dad told me of ways he used to amuse himself on road trips/long commutes/etc. He said if he saw a dog/cat walking down the road he'd pull over towards it and a friend on that side would open his/her door. Although if you did that today I'm sure Animal Rights groups would be at your throat

The recirc button is good to use on long trips, because if you are using A/C, then the compressor doesn't have to engage as often to maintain cabin temp. Therefore, using recirc nets you better gas mileage. If you aren't in recirc, then the compressor will be on pretty much all the time.

I always wondered why it pushed the button off. Other cars I driven dont push it off but it says to use outside air to defrost never knew why. Learn something every day.

WOW! how strange is this? I was driving home last night and was going past a construction zone and noticed a lot of smoke from a tractor....i went to press the 'recirculate' button to prevent the fumes from coming into the car and it wouldn't stay in! (i had the dial set to window defrost). So at the time i thought i'd check on GenVibe to see if this is an issue....i thought i'd check the current threads first before doing a search and then post....and this old thread was started up again TODAY!are you all living in the trunk space of my vibe????

I've had that happen if the dial is halfway between positions. If I have it fully in defrost or defrost/floor, I can switch to recirculate. Which doesn't do any good to have moist, recirculated air blowing on the windshield, but still. If the dial is somewhere in between, the recirculate button does not stay down.

MY dad used to have a green 1977 Triupmh convertable And the reason he underlined it, I would guess, is because he thinks badly of what my dad did over 40 years ago. (He was quoting me without using the quote box)

note to self, read the whole thread before replying Times and attitudes change. When I was growing up, it was no big deal to drive drunk. Cops were more interested in making sure you just got home safe. It's a lot different today though, definitely not worth it.

I wish it was more like it was when my dad was growing up. He tells me stories of his friends and him highway racing two to a car (My dad and his friend in a roadrunner, don't remember the other car). They used to race across a highway for some time, and meet up at an A&W restaraunt. He said one time they were able to finish their food and drinks before the other guys made it there

Yeah, I think it was said, the Recirc button is usually good for two things.1) Cooling off the car quicker with the A/C on... Because it's cooling cooled air, it works better. (This has the side-effect of making the air blow faster, as well)2) In case you're behind something stinky (diesel truck, garbage truck, etc) It'll cut off the outside air so the smell isn't as bad.
