Shucking Fit

Post by joatmon »

oct. 18-19, is the St. Mary's Oyster Festival http://www.usoysterfest.com/The highlight of the festival is the US National Oyster Shucking competetion, the winner becomes the US National Oyster Shucking Champion, and gets to go to Galway for the International/world oyster shucking competition, for a shot at the worlld title. There was a big (at least locally) fight a couple years ago when Guiness, who sponsors the International competition and a number of other national and regional competitions, tried to organize a US national contest because the one here is sponsored locally, with good ole American beers, and they wouldn;t let Guiness in. Guiness tried, but the locals had copyrighted/trademarked a bunch of terms, such as US Oyster shucking competition" so Guiness wasn;t able to put much of a name on the contest or on the winner of the competition, so they buckled and let the one here continue to generate the US National Champion. I've been a couple of times, it's ~15 miles from my house, and the contestants are awesome, if I tried to use a knife like that I'd be minus a few fingers. I really hate oysters. Like eating slugs, except they are bigger, saltier, and slimier. Yum. Still, it's an excuse to post a thread titled Shucking Fit!

I would love to see that competition live myself. I have seen it on Food Network. I would like to be on the east coast for crab/lobster cookouts.

The competition is great if you're really in to it. If not, it can be pretty tedious.Turns out that Isabel pushed a lot of crabs up the chesapeake, and the watermen are really pulling them in. Price for a bushel (#1 males) is down to about $30.quote:I would like to be on the east coast for crab/lobster cookouts. Maybe some year we'll pull off a million vibe march on DC.

Damn I am getting hungry now. I will have to go to the place in town that has all you can eat Alaskan King Crab legs. Very yummy with a bowl of clam chowder. I am a new englander at heart but have never visited yet. Being Scottish I am drawn to the sea.

I'm in a benefit give away for a bushel of number 1 jumbo males for next weekend. If I win feel free to drive down.
