Hit a deer with my Vibe! Ouch!

Post by cds22 »

Driving out in the country at dusk a few days ago and had a deer run out in front of me. Luckily I was *almost* able to stop in time so the damage to the car was minimal (no damage to me, airbag didn't go off... the deer ran off into the bush so not sure about him). Got off really lucky, just some damage to the side fender. Repair estimates average around $600. All of the guys who gave me estimates said they'd never seen someone hit a deer and end up with so little damage. Lucky for me the plastic trim around the wheel wasn't damaged, it costs $350 to replace! Once I found that out I took it off for safe keeping until I get the repairs done. Hard to figure why a new metal fender would cost $388 (mine can be repaired) while a piece of plastic trim costs almost as much.

OUCH is right! Good to hear that you weren't hurt at all though. It's hard to say about the deer. Probably just stunned it.

Yeah we could have our meeting at Stoney creek and maybe one of us could get up close and personal.

Very sad...I hit one as well few month ago. By chance, the deer only made little scratch on the gas trap. No dent, only scratch on the clear. A good wax and polishing compound fixed all.

Ouch! Lucky in one way with minor damage on your fender after all.Nice pics, it tells me how many holes hold the plastic cladding on this part of our Vibe and how much dirt can be trapped under it!!! Now thinking about waxing this before it's too late.

Surely you aren't thinking of waxing the cladding... Check the Washing and Waxing forum to find out why you should really not do that.

Exact. Just underneath. Had already waxed (the painted surface) and touch "a little" cladding with same result as some of us... hard to clean it back, even with all stuff already mentionned (from peanut butter - I didn't tried this yet!!! TO ArmorAll and so on..) Now, because I rustproofed myself under the car and inside doors-fenders with my own mixture (2 different rustproofing oil mixed with grease specially for rustproofing) I will be now able to protect all the "outside".

With a monotone, you do not ahve this problem. I can wax the entire car!

Nothing against deer....well yes maybe it is against deer lol. I hate deer, They have no personality like a dog or cat, and have no feelings or emotions like dog or cat...they act solely on instinct. I don't hate them enough to go out and kill them but I still dont like them. But I am very glad to see you are not hurt...imagine if you had been going slightely faster and it went through your window!!!

Well thanks for your concern. I saw a dead moose on the side of the highway yesterday that had been hit and was sure glad I hit something MUCH smaller.Does anyone know if those little wildlife whistle 'thingies' you can put on your bumper really work? I think they are supposed to emit a dual pitched noise that humans can't hear and it scares the wildlife away. Or maybe it's just a gimmic?

I'd be concerned about whether it would scare them or attract them, though. Sort of like dog whistles. It's all in how the animal has been conditioned as to how it's going to react.
