In case you need to replace the gas tank cap....

Post by lexicon »

I recently got the error code indicating an evaporative gas tank issue.... I ordered the Gates # 31832 cap and carefully walked the rubber seal off of the New Cap and carefully worked it back on my Old cap . Seems to work well.....

So, basically the o-ring,gasket/seal, is the only thing that goes bad on the gas cap assy? I've had the same code for seven years and just live with it (no inspections here in NW Ohio). I'll have to carefully look at mine and see if it's damaged.

Yup, buy the Gates cap, slowly "unscrew" along the threads without stretching it...my Vibe is 2005. After almost 20 yrs of the seal being slightly compressed for a seal, it finally stopped sealing.... for less than 10 dollars or if you live in Calif...about 2 gallons of gasoline.... it gets the job done. Recently did the same thing for my older Tacoma....

The seal on my 05 gas cap failed last year, I just bought a new one at NAPA. Guess I don't get the point of going to the trouble of moving the seal only.

The original cap that came w the car has a plastic tie to the vehicle that allows the cap to dangle while fueling....the cap I purchased did not....
what ever works... works...

Do you have a part number for the one you bought at NAPA?

I have the non-threaded type, part number THM 7031628. They also list a threaded type part number THM 7031719 that's a lot cheaper. Figures.
