Does anyones GT grind alot when putting it into reverse. Even if I bury the clutch down it still grinds. How much damage is this causing? This happens at least 75% of the time. Also at low RPM's there is a rattle in 1st through 3rd gear. Anyone else have this . This car seems like it is falling apart and it only has 15,000 miles

Seems like a grind while shifting into reverse is a pretty common issue. Reading the great post at http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=1135 - Manual trany FAQs, Admin II says:quote:Q: Why does my transmission grind going into reverse?A: This is fairly normal. Unlike the forward gears there is no synchromesh to prevent reverse gear from grinding. While this is normal behavior it likely isn't very good for the transmission, but there are ways to prevent this from occurring. Waiting 2-3 seconds after the car has stopped moving to shift into reverse usually helps. Another technique is simply to double clutch. Depress the clutch twice before shifting into reverse. Grinding will not occur at all if the engine is not running, so shifting into reverse before starting the car to back out of a parking space will also reduce this from occurring. Some other info at http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=4337Sometimes I will shift into neutral, let the clutch out, and then clutch in to shift into reverse. Not sure how much damage it does to grind, but can''t be too good. Don't know about the low RPM rattle in 1st - 3rd.
Reverse gear grind is very common, if not expected. I believe most trannys use the 'second' gear as the reverse gear. That's why the secong gear is usually the first to break down, if your transmission goes. It gets the most use. Good advice from joatmon regarding how to prevent the grind. I wouldn't worry about it too much anyway. These Toyota trannys are very reliable and durable.
I had more often this touble before. Now, since I press the clutch to start the engine, release the clutch and clutch again to put in reverse, it happen only very few time.
quote:I have had similar problems, but only say 1 time out of 20 does it grind. Even if clutch is completely in, it happens sometimes.Take it in, if mine persists I will do the same.I didn't grind your reverse gears!!!!
YES!I still visit GenVibe periodically. I have not forgotten about my "original" family over here!
This happens a lot of times when I'm parked and have to back up. Sometimes I also have noticed that going into reverse is very difficult so I put it back into neutral and then reverse.
