Winter Tires

Post by CDNpatriot »

I'm making a decision for a Pontiac 2009 GT wheel size. My summer tires are on 17 inch stock rims.

Questions
1. Cheapest I found was at Costco and veering towards the Michelin Ice. Should I get a 16 inch or 17 inch for the winter?

2. Also my existing ten year old winter rims are rusted that I purchased from Costco. Is this normal? Should I change them or is this a safety risk?

Between 16 and 17" tires it will depend on your wheels. Some oxidation or discoloring in steal wheels will not affect performance in a tangible way.
If the wheel looks like this aveo wheel linked below then don't worry.

You can always restore them like this guy did.

As for tires the Michelin Ice X is a good tire, but you might find a better deal on the Bridgestone Blizzak WS90 at Discount Tire (depending on your location and tire size).

The top rated winter tires are Blizzaks and, the X-ice you mentioned, and Altimax Arctic.
