Radio station names ?

Post by huy397 »

I just got got home from a road trip and I found out that the the radio is able to display station names, however, it seems to be qutie selective. There was this station called "ROCK 94", frequency is FM 94.5 and once I tune into that station, "ROCK 94" will show up, instead of the usual FM dial number ( 94.5)It was the only station that did this, every other station I listened to had no name but its frequency.

In defense of huy397, if RDS was something he knew nothing about, how would he know what to search on? Just a generic "radio" search?I know, I know, RTFM and all that. Sometimes the search doesn't cut it, and sometimes it is good to bring something up fresh, as the board is continually growing in membership and not everyone has experienced the early rush of GenVibe when EVERYTHING was new to EVERYONE here. If I'm in a group of friends that has discussed subject X and a new member joins the group, we don't put subject X off-limits, or insist that the new member listen to a tape recording of what was said before.... we talk about it again, and maybe get some new insights. I think we should lighten up a bit on the constant GO SEARCH! retorts. That's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

The best thing to do in this circumstance is to point out previous threads (with no sarcasm) to the initial poster and add your comments on the topic, if necessary. Plain and simple. (I'm saying this nicely, so no one better get offended! )quote:I just got got home from a road trip and I found out that the the radio is able to display station names, however, it seems to be qutie selective.Back on topic; we only have one RDS station in my area and it only displays the name, no info. When I go up to Cleveland or Columbus almost every station I listen to had many more RDS features (station name, INFO, TRAFFIC). I have yet, however, to see a station display the current song playing on air. Too bad it seems this feature never really caught on fully with many radio stations.

I keep hoping I'll find a station that will display song title/artist via RDS, but have pertty much given up on it. Sometimes I get "INFO", but it's usually just the station's slogan, which they say on the air all the time anyway. And I've never had the "TRAF" function work, the stations that broadcast the signal that triggrers the "TRAF" to light up almost never have any traffic reports.

There is one in Seattle that broadcasts artist/title info as well.. It is a pop/Hip-Hop station, but I don't remember which one. It doesn't do a auto time update though. only 94.9 KUOW radio in Seattle will do that.

Here in the Portland, OR area, there are a GREAT many stations that broadcast in RDS, it is pretty cool. Press the Info button and find out a little more, or get the request line number..depends on the station. I for one enjoy learning more all the time. I just recently figured out how to do a P-TYPE search and a TRAF search. Not a bad feature on either count!!!!

There is only one station here that I have seen it work for, but it's pretty much my favorite station anyway, so I am happy with the feature. I have not figured out the other ones like the p-type search or the traffic thing. I think every station I would ever switch to in the morning has traffic anyway, but when I do push the traffic button, it just puts on some random stupid station that's not playing the traffic at the time. It would be cool if the traffic was done at specific times, like how the weather channel does local weather on the 8s or something, then the traffic button would take you to whatever station was doing the traffic at that exact time...but it doesn't work that way, so I don't use it. Oh well.

Oh well. FYI, P-TYPE is easy, turn the PTYPE dial to what kind of station you want, ie; Rock. Then hit the search/scan button (below the volume) it will stop on a station broadcasting RDS for that type. Not needed in your hometown usually, I use it when I am travelling a little.

Problem is the only time that PTYPE works is if the stations broadcast their PTYPE...since few to no stations broadcast any RDS data, PTYPE is as useless to me as TRAF...

Now there is another Cincinnati station (107.1 I think) that sends artist and title, but their music just isn't my style!!!
