2003 AWD Rear defogger & wiper not working!

Post by bigdaddivibe »

Hey everyone,

I recently bought my 2003 pontiac vibe AWD before the summer started and i realized early on that the rear wiper and rear defogger doesn't work.

The first thing I did was open up the back part where the rear wiper motor is and the defogger electronics are located. It looked as though everything was okay on the surface level, i did notice however that the plastic covering a few of the wires had melted to the motor. This made me think that the motor overheated, which I had found was a problem in another forum.

To make sure that it wasn't just a fuse or anything, i replaced the rear defogger fuse in the front of the car. When i turned the defogger on the button lit up but a second after I heard the fuse pop.

I have a few questions:

1. Is the rear defogger and rear windshield wiper both connected with the same fuse??
2. what do you guys thing the problem is??

Thanks!

The rear wiper is fuse #7 (15 amp) and the rear defogger is fuse #2 (30 amp).

You have a problem with a shorted wiring harness because of having two items in the same area that are on different fuses. You may also have a bad wiper motor and/or defogger, so you have multiple problems. As a total guess, I would say possibly were wires bend at the hatch when you open and close the rear. The only way to find the problem is to get your ohm meter out and start tracing the wires until you find the short. You could disconnect the wires at the wiper motor and defogger, replace the fuses and turn the wiper and defogger on, see if the fuses still blow or not. If the fuses do not blow then check voltage at the wires to makes that is O.K. Check this with the hatch open and closed.
