I have a 2006 vibe, base model. Every time I fill up the gas tank, gas always overflows no matter where I get gas. The automatic shut off on the nozzle does not shut off soon enough. Anybody else having this happen and if so, what is the fix for this problem?
Do you fill it yourself every time? Is the gas nozzle fully inserted into the tank?
It is possible that there is an issue with the filler neck, but if it were so bad that there isn't enough back pressure to trigger a pump nozzle to stop I'd guess you'd smell gasoline from the rear all the time.
One question first off.....Is your Check Engine Light on????
I've never had a fuel tank out of a Vibe/Matrix so I do not know how the tanks EVAP system is designed, but 99% of all cars built after, oh say, 1972 have some sort of vent valve within the system either in there fuel tanks, vented through the fuel fill neck, and/or plumbed via tubing to somewhere like the charcoal canister or some other silly device to prevent them from backfilling and/or spilling gas. I do not know if the system in the Vibe is completely built into the tank, ( probably not ) or how much of it is within the EVAP vapor recovery system or maybe just plumbed randomly throughout the car. ( Don't laugh! I've actually seen a car that was designed with eight lines run from front to back just for the EVAP system. ) Either way it sounds to me like you are having an issue with the vent valve in your fuel system on your car and you need to take it to the dealership or a reputable garage to get it repaired. If the check engine light is on it's a good bet its EVAP code. If it were me this is where I would logically start looking for the problem. Keep us posted on the outcome.
There is a hard plastic 1" tube that runs from the back to the front under the right side for vapor recovery. Just a pinhole sized leak in this will cause a stubborn CEL.
