Need help choosing hitch for 2006 Vibe Base

Post by BeVibed »

Hi!
I hope you guys (especially those who have a 2006 Vibe Base model) can answer a few questions for me about hitches.
I have a new/used blue 2006 Vibe Base model (40,000 miles woo hoo-driven by a 93 year old man in town only-lol he traded it in on a RAV -wanted an extended warranty?! and now misses the Vibe). Pretty soon I will be customizing it a bit, but right now I need to put a hitch on it.
I have noticed that some of you have no problem attaching a hitch and some have to move the muffler, but I don't know if the year and model of the car have to do with that, or the brand/class of hitch does.
I would like to get a Class II hitch, but if it is a Class II that has problems bumping/ needs adjusting for the muffler, I don't think I want to deal with that, especially since I travel on a lot of gravel and bumpy roads.
It looks like Hidden Hitch and Draw-Tite have only a Class I, Curt has a Class II.
If I have to go with a Class I to avoid the muffler adjusting issue, which brand and model number of hitch have you had better results with and was easier to install? Or if I am able to go with the Curt which model number?
I will not be towing much at this time, just an extremely little lightweight trailer to haul trash (have to keep the Vibe clean!!!). I may later get some kind of light travel trailer that in an emergency I may want to haul out if I am able to get out (tsunami and earthquake zone here).
Thank you for your time, and I am now

I installed a CURT 122343 onto my 06 base. While, I did have a problem with the receiver hitting the muffler, but it didn't even make contact until I tried driving the car and things started vibrating. There is no need to move the muffler. All it took was a few well placed blows with a hammer to clearance the muffler enough and I've been fine since.

I could try to provide pictures if you'd like.

Honestly, installing the wiring kit was far more a PITA (wiring kit CURT 55057).

I wouldn't worry much about upgrading to the class 2. Class one can handle 2000lbs and the vibe can't pull more than 1500.

I went with a Curt hitch and wiring harness. I too have issues with the vibrating, but I deal with it. I think mine is due to the heat shield missing a nut on it. Once I get that fixed, hopefully it goes away. Wiring harness wasn't too bad to do. Hitch was probably worse because of all of the crud in the holes.

Which wiring harness did you get? The one that just piggybacks off the taillights, or the one that piggybacks off the taillights AND needs a direct wire to the battery that you need to run under car? I got the latter.

Mine didn't have any crud in the bolt holes, but it probably helped that it's a Florida car.

I did the latter as well. I read mixed things that some didn't work without the power to the battery so I figured better safe than sorry.

I just installed a uhaul hitch on an 04' vibe awd and it fits very well, clears the exhaust perfectly.
