2004 Vibe - Actuator blew up the blower?

Post by Bigbadjonv »

Hey guys, love the site.

So far I've replaced my belt tensioner and actuator with the help of the forums.

I have one problem though.

After replacing the actuator and messing with the cabin air filter a bit, I started the car to test out the AC and see if the clicking noise from the actuator was gone.

Everything sounded good, but all of a sudden I heard a loud noise and the AC stopped blowing air.

I got down and opened up the blower and I found this:

What the heck happened from changing the actuator that made this occur?

Actuator seems to working fine. No clicking and the door is changing when I hit the circulation button just fine.

Oh and I ordered a replacement and will be tackling that on Wednesday night.

I just want to make sure whatever caused that blower to "blow" isn't something I did that will happen again after I install the next blower.

I would have to say that is just coincidence that you had the blower cage break when you were working on the recirculate motor. It does not even look like something that recently broke, but rather something that broke a while ago and was patched up or something. How long have you owned this car? It may have just been on it's last legs holding together and just decided to give up since you were already working on the AC!

Good luck on it!

Sorry to burst your bubble, but trb is right and you didn't ruin it! ;) There's nothing you could have done to the recirc actuator to break the blower.

Welcome to GenVibe Jon :D Yeah this was purely coincidental! There was likely some debris in the way combined with thousands of miles of "bumpy, shaky" driving, then fatigue of the plastic itself = cracked blower wheel! You ought to listen to a metal blower wheel when it finally cracks & falls off of a steel shaft :o Hearing protection doesn't even come close to protecting your ears from the severe screeching noises. Anyways glad to see you tackling & fixing your own problems. Good luck
