Clutch replace

Post by Rzza »

I have the 2zz 6 speed vibe GT 2003. The clutch is only 25000 miles old and it needs replacing again. After research I see conflicting info regarding which clutch is proper for my car. Can anyone verify the size that I need. I think it is 8 3/8" and possibly we used the wrong one 25000 miles ago. Thanks for any insight you can provide. Here is the clutch I would like to buy, locally. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detai ... 1&pt=01351

Sounds like my GT! The prior owner had the clutch replaced before I bought it, and it only lasted 12K miles! It was a cheap Korean Seco brand clutch. My thread: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=43780&p=504322

While that clutch you are asking about might physically fit on your GT, it is probably not the recommended clutch for the GT model. That is the 130 hp base model clutch kit. And unless you are getting a shop discount, $128 is a bit much for a clutch for our cars.

I bought an Exedy KTY14 clutch for my GT last year. You can look it up on their website: http://www.exedyusa.com
Part Number: KTY14

EXEDY is a Tier 1 supplier to 11 Japanese car manufacturers along with Ford and GM.
This means we work hand in hand to engineer products used in the new vehicles for sale at your local dealership - right now.

The EXEDY Pro-Kit clutch assembly you will receive is manufactured on the same production line as OEM clutch components! Not many companies can promise you the guaranteed operation and durability that the car manufacturers demand of our product.

Clutch cover assembly (pressure plate):
All cover assemblies endure a precise robotic testing process to ensure proper clamp load and clutch lift separation. This step ensures optimal pedal feel for better drivability.
To help guarantee durability, the diaphragm spring (dark fingers in the center) receives special high frequency induction heat treating. This helps prevent the wear that normally occurs at the contact surface of the release bearing. Together, these procedures provide you a like-new pedal feel throughout the life of your clutch.

Clutch Disc:
EXEDY engineers, perfects and manufactures our own friction materials. We produce a material with exceptional friction and wear characteristics that will help engage smoothly, grip as expected and provide you with a longer lasting installation.
Disc Spring Damper: This is the center section of the clutch disc. EXEDY spring-type disc dampers are patented worldwide to suppress engine and driveline noise by absorbing vibrations.

Vehicle-specific designs without compromise - enjoy your ride!

Specs:
Disc Size 210mm
Spline Teeth / Major Dia 21T / 1in

I got it for $95 on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001B5 ... ge_o04_s00

Now it looks like Amazon is saying it does not fit the GT model, but according to the manufacturer website, it is the correct one for the GT models.

Good luck on it!

Did you also replace or resurface the flywheel? Which flywheel should I buy to compliment the kty14? Thanks

I was going to have it resurfaced, but then I found one on Amazon when I was looking for the clutch kit. This is it now: http://www.amazon.com/Standard-Flywheel ... C31GNMYVCY

BUT it was only $42 back in October! I can't believe how much it went up in price, but maybe they marked it waaaay down when I bought it. $40 is about what a machine shop would charge to resurface yours, so that was a steal IMO. I also bought new ARP flywheel bolts for it since the Toyota ones are supposedly one time use bolts. I got them from Jegs for about $28 for an older Toyota Corolla. Someone on the Celica website said they used them on their Celica GTS flywheel. The "proper" ARP bolts for a 2ZZ Toyota motor are about $46.

Thank you very much. The shop that is doing the work for me said that if you know how to properly shim the flywheel then you won't need to replace it. Does that make sense? Forgive me, I'm hardly mechanically inclined.

I have not heard of shimming a flywheel before, but then I've never worked on a hydraulic clutch before the Vibe. My Mustang has a mechanical cable clutch and they are adjusted by the cable. I looked it up and if more than 0.020" is removed from the flywheel surface during machining, then the hydraulic clutch may not work properly and a shim is recommended to re position the flywheel face back to the proper position for the clutch to work properly. So it sounds correct that if the correct shim is used between the crank and flywheel, then you don't need to replace the flywheel even if it is machined more than the 0.020" of tolerance. Sounds like your shop knows what it is doing!

Now you got me thinking about mine since it was a resurfaced flywheel from someone else. That Standard Flywheels place is a flywheel exchange program so you can get a fresh flywheel right away, and send your old one to them later on if you want to for a core. Mine looked pretty good, but it had no mention about shims or how much was taken off to clean it up. My clutch works great, except for when I try to powershift!
