Would a 2nd gen nav system work in a 1st gen that had nav?

Post by treesleavedents »

I've been poking around on here trying to find the answer to this for a few days now. I found the thread where the guy put a nav system into his wifes matrix. But he had to do a ton of work because it wasn't originally equipped with the GPS module, etc.

What I want is to add a small subwoofer hidden under the rear floor, and aux input to the head unit.

Here's where I have to decide which route to take. I like the look and functionality of factory nav systems. Aftermarket ones look tacky and don't look like they should fit since you have to buy the dash kit. Ideally I would love to take an 09-10 nav system and install it into my 03, but I have no idea if it would even fit in the dash bezel... And if it did, would the hardware for the GPS and other stuff work with a newer unit?

If that is impossible, I would like to add an aux input and sub line out on teh existing 03 nav system. Any idea if that's possible?

Without a lot of reverse engineering your best option is aftermarket. I'm sure you can find one that looks acceptable.

Unfortunately the only ones that look even close to acceptable are the chinese aftermarket ones that are tailored to individual cars... When I was car shopping the Mazda3 forums had a ton of info on one particular brand and model. Very cool stuff, but doesn't seem reliable. I'm not stranger to splicing soldering and dash removal so I figure I'm gonna try to find the wiring diagrams for both and see if it's possible.
