05 vibe base auto dies when shifted to neutral.

Post by FBR »

Looking for some help. I have searched and called around and no one has seen this issue. Car starts fine but cuts off when shifted to or through neutral either way. Can start in neutral and then shift to drive or reverse ok but if I leave in neutral after starting it dies after a few seconds. Also the instrument illumination and needle lights go out in neutral but indicator and warning lights stay on. I washed engine a day before this started in prep for intake gasket replacement. Have codes P0705 (trans range sensor) and P0500 (speed sensor / gear selector). I'm guessing its the neutral safety switch or a short from water. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Update. After two days of problem I decided to shift from D to N while rolling at 5 mph and car did not die and this fixed problem. Could something have been out of sync? After two more days of driving all is fine.

My best guess is that you had some water getting into the transmission range sensor or into a harness that connects to it. The water has dried up and you should be fine.
