Pontiac / Toyota Plug and Play radio upgrade w/ MP3 and Aux?

Post by ToyMaker »

Hi there just got a 2004 vibe with an iffy radio, does anyone know if I can get another later model Pontiac / Toyota OEM radio and swap it out using the same wire harness?

I want to get something with MP3 capability and an aux jack.

Looking to avoid getting an aftermarket HU and deal with the wire harness and possibly losing the dimmer function, loss of bass(without an external amp), and reduced FM reception. At least that was my experience when I swapped out the OEM pioneer deck from my 04 scion xB.

Thanks for any input. My 04 vibe came with the "upgrade 6 speaker stereo", for what it's worth. But I haven't been able to find much details about, and being a 10 year old unit, the feature and obviously a bit dated.

Nothing OEM is "plug and play" except for something from another 03-08 Vibe, but none of them have the Aux input. You pick out what aftermarket radio you want, get the wiring harness adapter kit to plug into the Vibe harness, antenna adapter, and dash adapter kit to install it in your dash. That is your best option to get all the latest features.

There are some GM radios that might plug in, but most of them have the theft security code feature that the Vibe does not have and might not work after install. The only Toyota radios that might work are from the 03-04 Matrix since they used the same Vibe style radio, but again no aux. Later models used Toyota radios and they probably don't use the same wiring harness plug.

Edit: I just found a seller on ebay that is adding the aux jack to OEM radios, but IMO it is a bit much when you can get a new unit with bluetooth and USB input for around the same amount. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pontiac-Vibe-20 ... 4897.l4275" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

We put a nice double DIN unit in my son's 06 and it works very well. He does not have the 6 speaker system in his, but I do in my 03. There are several people on here with aftermarket installs that might add their input on this.

Good luck with it!

HOLD ON !!! $130 for OEM ????.........I paid $130 for my Kenwood KDCX597 earlier this year with install hardware. Its not a double DIN, but at the time it had more audio options than double DIN. I have a CD player, USB port, hands free calling & can stream pandora through my phone. It sounds fantastic ! Dont get an OEM !!! :lol: When I swapped out the OEM HU it sounded like heaven & my Polks REALLY came to life !

Thanks for the reply. Guess I will just have to bit the bullet when the wife starts complaining.

I am looking at double DIN units mostly because of the bigger buttons... as far as I know most double DIN units under $200 have similar power output as single DIN units.
