Bad blower

Post by buffett97 »

My blower started clicking behind the glove box a bit ago, then the blower started working intermittently on all levels, then only on high every now and then. Completely stopped working a few days ago. No heat, defrost, etc ... Took in in to the shop and they told me the blower was out, that they couldn't fix it because the electronics would need to be reset and they weren't capable of doing that there. I'm not too car intelligent, anyone have any idea what they were talking about? Thanks for any help

You don't say the year of your car but as far as I know there are no "electronics to reset" for any year.
Usually when a blower quites there is a lot of noise associated with it dying, squealing and grinding. In most cases it is the blower resistor which fails. Default is full speed so when it fails you lose the slower speeds until you're left with just high.
It's a cheap ($30.00) part and a relatively easy fix. If it is the blower motor, TYC makes a good one for $40.00.

Agreed! Sounds like the mechanic and/or shop, either didn't know what they were doing OR simply didn't want your business. Get a second opinion at another shop!

I have had a similar (if not the same issue)
My blower or the fan brushes has been on the fritz for a year or 2. I have been "tapping" the underside of it behind the glove compartment for months with a rubber mallet. Well a month or so back I noticed I didn't have to tap it anymore. Until today when it went out on my fiance. I tried almost beating it this evening and it still wouldn't come on, but no one noticed any noises I think it just died.

Does anyone know what I should do to finally fix it?

thanks

Buy a new blower motor, they sell them on ebay for like $40-50. We had to do the same on my son's car, kick under the dash, and it finally died. Easy to replace too. 2 bolts hold the computer in place, and then 3 bolts hold the motor in place.

Some on here have taken the motor apart and cleaned it up and gotten some more life from it, but I haven't looked into it.

For comparison, Nissan Sentra blower motor replacement involves:

I'd bet that this dashboard will definitely have some rattles once it is all put back together. What a mess. Glad we have Vibe's ;)
