HVAC blower control bulb (2009)

Post by kumquat »

I cannot find a part number for the backlight bulb for the blower motor on my 2009. Does anyone know what it is?

I am sorry I do not have a direct answer for you about the bulb used as I have not had my Vibe controller apart. A general answer is that most newer vehicles use bulbs for the heater controls that are referred to as "grain of rice" bulbs. I had a Mercury Villager (Nissan Quest) that had about half the bulbs out in the heater control panel. Mercury does not sell replacement bulbs and had no listing for the bulb. I found out that most car manufacturers do not list these lamps for replacement parts. Ford would sell me a new controller that had new bulbs in it for over $400.00 but no information on the bulbs in the controller. Digging around as I work on electronic equipment, I found that Mouser Electronics Inc had a bulb that worked perfect in the Villager heat controller. Here is link to that bulb:

http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/JKL ... Shg2mjU%3d

On that page if you click on the "Data Sheet", you will get the size and dimensions for the bulb holder. This is called a Neo-Wedge T-1 base lamp. Another bulb they have is the Neo-Wedge T-1 1/4 base lamp, which can be found here:

http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/JKL ... Ik5g%3d%3d.

Once again check the size, as the second bulb is a little bigger then the one that fit my Villager. These are common lamps used by a lot of vehicle manufactures for these assemblies. I had also heard that Toyota sells these bulbs at the dealership for around $9.00 each. "I found a exact replacement bulb and socket at a Toyota dealer. the part # is 84999-10310" and "I removed the bulbs from the plastic sockets and replaced them with Radio Shack #7219 Micro Lamps (12 Volts 60ma Wire terminal base)" was reply's I found about the Villager lamps. At the Mouser price, I just bought 10 for $0.59 each and replaced all the bulbs in the controller when I had it apart (8 bulbs) and never deal with it again. I hope this gives you some info to work with or some ideas to try like the Radio Shack bulbs. Good luck

I don't know if this helps or not BUT the A/C button should be very similar, if not identical. Here are pics of when junior took his apart a few years ago

Notice that this control used an incandescent lamp AND an LED! I would try to convert the lamp to an LED if possible (everything is possible here). A small resistor and your choice of color for an LED and you should be back in business!

The center button lamp is a Neo-Wedge based lamp and most likely the first one I listed above. These Neo-Wedge bulbs are also available in LED of different colors from http://www.superbrightleds.com with a part number somewhere around a #NEO3 for size. It is a little hard to tell from the pictures above for the size so double check the measurements. The problem with the LED lamps are the length of them are longer then the normal incandescent lamps and would not fit in most control housings. Another thing to keep in mind is that LED light is only one wave length of light, so the color and brightness you get through the colored plastic bezel will be different then the incandescent.

Here is a better link to the LED Superbite web page that takes you to the Neo bulbs with sizes:

And for even brighter use, these high power LED:

I almost forgot to warn you that LED need to be install with the correct polarity or the bulb will not light. Install the bulb and try it before you button it all up. If it does not light, remove the bulb and turn it 180° degrees. You don't have to worry about the polarity with incandescent bulbs.
