New Wheels

Post by EricPala3 »

I have a stock 2003 Base Vibe, meaning it has the steel wheels with plastic hubcaps. Im looking into buying new wheels, such as these:

Would I then have to buy a new braking system or would it still work with what I have, and all I have to do is take my car to a shop to switch the wheels? Thanks! (new to cars, I'm a teen with my first car)

So long as wheels are 5x100 bolts pattern and have an offset near stock, and are over 14" in size, they should fit just fine! Current brakes and all. Only thing that might get hung up on is hub size, in which case hub spacers might be recommended. Tire shops would probably have better word on that, and possibly even the hub adapters to fit.

Craigslist is a good source for lightly used wheels/rims, too. You can get good deals on various rims with or without tires (though do be careful for the obvious reasons). If you get rims without the tires you will need to go to a shop to get the tires moved over to the new rims. Also, if you want to keep your current tires, make sure you buy 16" rims, as that is the stock rim size.

Hi EP3!
Welcome to the group. It appears those wheels are not compatible with your 2003 base. Keep looking! It is not worth the hassle adapting your car to incorrect wheels. I suggest you look for some Scion TC take-offs. They are double-five spokes and they look great. Otherwise stock Vibe alloys look decent. Vibes require wheels with a lot of space(high offset) to clear the front calipers. Plus, Toyota/Scion wheels are the only wheels with the correct hub center bore: 54.1 mm., Important because Vibe/matrix use hub-centric wheels.
Here's a few sites I use:
http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/tech/tec ... ?techid=92
http://www.performanceplustire.com/tech ... t-lug-nuts
http://www.csgnetwork.com/tiresizescalc.html
http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/results. ... cial=false
http://www.roadkillcustoms.com/hot-rods ... readMM=100
This last site isn't terribly accurate, It lists the 03-08 Vibe as having a 57.1mm Hub Center Bore which is wrong! (54.1mm actual)
