Hatch opening rubber gasket

Post by jake75 »

I was unloading bags of mulch and evidently dragged some over the bottom part of the hatch molding - pulled it out - is loose now. Is this a do it yourself job to fix - Do I need an adhesive? I tried to push it back but it isn't the same. Keeps coming out again.

It just gets pushed into place, but you need to make sure it is on the car's pinch, and the gasket's groove is the thing it's going over. I've done this to my own car a few times when pulling parts off. Try checking the other areas of the gasket to make sure it is all in there properly, as it may not be completely pressed on, and may be bunching up. If it ended up stretched you may need a replacement, or look up a way to shrink it (if possible).

Decades ago (1994, while replacing the door/window gaskets for my 1984 Rabbit Convertible) I used '3M weatherstrip adhesive' to keep everything in place: http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/3m-s ... /7160143-P" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
As I recall, this stuff was MUCH cheaper 20 years ago, but then what wasn't?

DISCLAIMERS: Bright yellow, so any extraneous drips will show, and smells horrible while drying, so use with plenty of ventilation. The solvent in it likely melts some plastics, like the Vibe gray cargo-hold plastics, so apply with care!

It is apparently also available in Black now: http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/3m-s ... /7720004-P" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I'd probably try either of these before the DollarTree 2 Tubes for $1 Superglue Gel, because the 3M stuff can flex and bend, while Superglue Gel would not.

My 2003 Vibe Base Auto 2-tone Salsa "SalsaWagon" was built in May 2002. I acquired it in Feb 2004/Traded it in on a 2016 Honda HR-V in Feb 2018.

I must not have been pushing/aligning correctly - seems my daughter in law has succeeded in getting that gasket back into place - and stay there - without using any any adhesive.
That probably would have been charged at least 1 hr mechanic time at the dealer.

given all the recall work GM will be doing for the next year, your car would probably have been held hostage at the dealer all day just for that job. "We'll give you a call when we get it done." Yeah, sure you will.
I'm glad you got it fixed in the driveway Jake.

My dealer where I got my 2009 - former Pontiac/GMC, now Chevrolet, is pretty good. I would have bought my 2003 Vibe there but they didn't have anything without a moon roof at the time. My daughter in law was the one who knew how to get the gasket back in place - not me. I assumed it had to be glued to stay in place. Evidently not so. She is a gem.
