Ok to load a sofa in the back????

Post by VibeinPA »

Has anyone tried to load something that large? I'm looking to buy a small sofa in 3 weeks. The one I'm currently interested in has the following dimensions: Height = 27 1/8" , Depth = 34 5/8", Width = 70 7/8". I haven't measured the inside of my car yet, but I believe it can fit with the front passenger seat down. I 'm sure it will have to partially rest on the front center storage compartment. I'm very worried that a sofa may be a little to heavy for the compartment. I will definitely bungee it to the plastic floor to prevent it from shifting (if there's even room for it to shift). I'm hoping it will fit with the rear closed. It's a good 45 minute trip to bring this thing home. I'd appreciate any thoughts about if this will work and if it's wise to try.As a side note, I have to say that my Vibe is over 3,100 miles after a month and a half and I am loving this car more than ever. My drive to work is only 5 miles, so that tells you how much I drive this thing for fun. It's done well on several longer road trips and the gas mileage is respectable for this hot humid weather with the A/C on full blast (around 29 MPG the past two tanks). Also, I am seeing them more often in my area (Allentown, PA). I honestly think I've seen around 7 - 10 different ones.Satellite base Vibemanual transPower Moon and Tunespolished wheel upgrade

if it will fit safely, it should be no problem to carry it. ofcorse your not going to able to see out the back window..so be careful changing lanes. the weight of the couch will be spread out pretty good so i wouldnt worry about messing up the plasticGreg

Hey VibeinPA!I would go for it! Bring a bungie strap to keep your hatch down in case you can't close it and you should be fine. Post a picture if you can. Let us know how you make out transporting your sofa.

Thank you all for those helpful replies! I'll most likely be attempting this in 3 or 4 weeks. And I will definitely take pictures. Sadly enough, I can't wait to see how it turns out. This is why I love this car, it's extremely practical; yet, it's still very fun to drive. For smaller items, such as grocery bags, footballs, or anything that size that can move easily on the plastic floor, I've found the cargo net system to be extremely useful. It's a little pricey at $35, but it's well worth it. It's also worth buying a few small rubber mats to protect your plastic floor. It's anything but "scratch resistant" like Pontiac claims.

I once put a couch, love seat, chair, end and coffee tables in a Integra with my then fiance in the front seat. Not bad eh! Oh did I fail to mention it was all Ikea furniture in boxes, some assembly required? Details, details.

I'll be hauling a 6 foot long countertop from Home Depot next weekend. I think I will have to flaten out the front passenger seat for this one to fit.Just thought I'd share!
