2005 Vibe remote starter - Bypass? No bypass?

Post by Curlybandit »

Hey everyone.

I've had a remote starter sitting in the box for the last two years with every intention of getting it installed. Now with winter around the corner, I'd like to get it done ASAP.

I've been doing some research and the main question I haven't been able to answer is whether or not my '05 Vibe has a immobilizer. There doesn't seem to be any consensus on this, even in this forum. It's essentially the difference between dropping an extra $100 on the bypass module or not.

Can anyone definitively answer this question?

Thanks!

So far this is the closest I've come to finding an answer:

What remote start kit do you have?

When I installed my 2005 remote start, I did not need the bypass module. Some of the confusion I believe comes from manufactures that crossed Toyota and GM information. The 2005 does not have a transponder in the key. If you had copies of your Vibes key made with an off the shelf blank and were able to start your car with the duplicate (make sure the original keys are not in the car), it confirms you do not need the bypass module.

Link to some notes from the install on my 2005, hopefully it clear up what is often poorly documented or left to the wind in the instruction manual.

The Kit I used I later found for $39 during seasonal sales promo.

This site has most of the wiring colors for the 2005, which may help isolate the issue of the immobilizer.

Thanks for the reply.

It's the ProStart 2-in-1 remote starter and keyless entry. Not sure if you've heard of this brand. I picked up from Canadian (aka Crappy) Tire. It's like a mix between Pep Boys and Home Depot.

I've never had a duplicate key made but the keys certainly don't look like they are anything other than just metal and plastic.

Looked it up, I see the Canadians retailers are just as good as the US ones in exaggerating the range of the keyfob. 1600ft range..... Most are lucky if they get 100'

The kit you have it originally setup for a manual transmission and door locks. Mine was a simpler install, remote start only. That said, most of the wiring listed in the manual is similar to what I found. The model you have definitely appears capable of being used on almost any vehicle, turbo shutdown timer, tach sens, glow plug activation, and a boatload of relay options.

That aside, if you are uncertain about the bypass module the easiest way to figure it out, get an off the shelf duplicate key. For about $2 and 5 minutes it will be easier than 2nd guessing yourself before you start the installation. Worst case you end up with a spare key to give a family member.

The 2005 does not require an immobilizer bypass.
