K&N CAI.. 2009 2.4L.. Poor MPG's

Post by abramsgunner »

OK, So I installed the Typhoon CAI on my '09 Vibe with the 2.4L and 5 speed auto... Mileage on my 1st half tank has dropped to 25mpg from my usual 27-28mpg...

Is there any way to tweak it so that that sweet noise starts around 2000 rpm instead of 3000+ rpm so I can try and keep my foot out of it a little bit?

*Note: Just an odd way to say I love the noise and will have to learn to keep the revs down a bit... Typhoon = Two Thumbs Up!

There are several variables to check. First thing is the check engine light on? Verify are the clamps that hold the intake together, are they all tight and not leaking. It takes some time for the ECU to re calibrate itself for the larger amount of air going in to the engine. You may be pressing on the accelerator peddle harder than you use to, to hear the noise.
During the ECU recalibration the MPG display on the dash is going to be wrong. Do you keep track of the millage from tank to tank, or do you rely on the dash readout?

LOL! Amazingly my gas mileage has remained about the same, around 24 mpg or so. I wish it was better, and I told my wife the intake would improve my mileage, but, I guess I was wrong.... It sure is fun dropping the trans down a gear or two manually and accelerating!

SeattleJeremy... Thank you for the advice... truth is... it's just my foot... I know I've kept the revs up every chance I get just to hear the noise... LOL In a week or two I'm sure I will be back to driving like a granny and she'll return to my normal mileage :D

PS. No dash readout on mpg... I figure it all up manually.

I am sure it is just your "new" driving style that has dropped your MPGs. We see right around 26-28 MPG with 50%/50% driving on both our 2009 Vibe GTs. We have had the K&Ns installed for 4+ years now.
