Does anyone know if there are any ill affects if you put on 17" factory wheels on a GT with a sunroof. Was just wondering why it was not available with a sunroof and secondly does anyone want to sell there 17" factory wheels.
The "myth" is that the 17" rims combined with a moonroof, combined with aggressive tires and combined with hard cornering would cause the moonroof to crack, or worse shatter. In order to place the moonroof into position, a cross member was sacrified and therefore the Vibe's Body flex was compromised. So under extreme cornering with aggressive tires/rim combo, the glass in the Moonroof cracked or shattered.Be warned that if you upgrade to 17" rims, and cause damage to your moonroof, that GM may not honor the warranty. But there have been plenty of people on this board who have made the switch and have had no problems whatsoever. Conclusion:do your own research, and make a decision. Then ask yourself, if the risk is worth having 17" rims.
The 2003 order guide in Canada references something about not meeting Government rollover standards with this combination. (So maybe if you drop it 2" at the same time, you're OK?)
I think they solved the safety problem by using less aggressive tires (all seasons tires) and now offer the combo on 04's. mine handles great . Of course they could have added something else that we don't realize but If you use the build option on the matrix site you can only get the moon & tunes with 17"'s if you select the all season tires if you select the summers tires are they call it the moon & Tune can't be selected. (You might need to use a CA or GA zip to get the better build options for the Matrix) So Factory 17 with All season tires prob would be an ok option. But what do I know Grumpyx
