Newbie with Bad AC Compressor

Post by Witty434 »

Hello all. I was not sure where to post this, so if this is wrong place -- please accept my apologies. Feel free to tell me where to post.

Stumbled upon this forum while searching the internet for info on 2004 Vibe AC problems. Car has already been to two different mechanics, one local small shop and then the dealer from which I bought car (used) nearly two years ago. Naturally, the extended warranty "just expired." Small shop quoted $1,700 to replace compressor and all the peripheral work. Dealership gave me a vague quote of $900. When I asked if $900 included all needed to repair AC, answer was "yes."

I have found refurbished compressors online from parts dsitributors anywhere from $300-$400. I see many on ebay for as low as $89. I am not a mechanic, nor am I mechanically inclined. The thought of putting tons of money into this car so soon makes me wince in pain. In fact, makes me want to have tranny checked and serviced first. Nothing like dropping one large chunk of change only to have transmission go shortly thereafter.

Love, love my car. Would like to see it approach 300,000 miles. My '95 Olds Aurora reached 198,000.

Help?

Yeah you can get a used AC Compressor cheap. Are you using a 1zz or 2zz. I have a 2zz compressor that I was thinking of selling.

My local "You Pick Junkyard" Charges $44.00 for an AC compressor with a warranty! Another junkyard in Green Bay, Wis. does excellent repair work at a reasonable price. Get to know your local junkyards.
But if your transmission needs service - get it done BEFORE it stops shifting correctly!
