I don't know if Matrices ever had OEM roof racks as an option.

Lots of folks have put racks on them though. Even if an OEM one was available, I'd still recommend an aftermarket one because the OEM one would probably be like the VIbe OEM one, which is better than nothing but has a few design characteristics I find annoying. The spacing between the crossbars is fairly close, even at the max adjustable range. This isn't a problem for a car top cargo box, but I've only used my vibe rack to carry boats, canoes and kayaks, and it woudl be better if I could spread out the cross bars more, especially for a long canoe. The cross bar height from the ground isn't the same, the rear cross bar is a little lower than the front , so when carrying that big canoe the front is higher, makiing quite a MPG eating parachute out of the boat. The cross rails sit close to the roof, and it can be a squeeze to get a rope or a tie down hook under them. But I don't carry the boats often enough to spend money on something better.

Since your friend is going to have to spend money anyway, probably best off to find a rack designed for whatever he wants to carry on the roof
