Misfire?

Post by DopeVibeGT »

Recently I've gotten a light code for misfire on Cylinder 3. So, I erased the code, took the spark plug out and visually looked at it and it looked fine. They only have 18k miles on them. I switched the coil from #2 to the #3 cylinder that was getting the code. Still misfire in cylinder 3. Now, I switched the plugs from #2 to #3 and erased the code. Waiting to see if the light comes on.

It took about 70 miles before the light came on again when I switched the coils. Now, the only other thing I can think of is the injector. Strange thing is IF it is the injector, I just ran Lucas oils fuel injector cleaner through it like 1500 miles ago.

BTW, the car has 219k miles on it and is perfect except for the CEL.

Thanks for any help.

It's throwing a P0303 code.

BTW, it isnt the spark plug either. I'm hoping it's a faulty injector. I have an appointment monday morning to have it checked.

Don't quote me on this, but I THINK you can try touching a long screwdriver to it with your ear on the handle while it's running and listen to see if the injector is doin' its thing right. I have been meaning to try this myself. Just make sure you don't have anything that could drop into any moving parts.

Well, it's compression. They said cyl 3 is down to half of what it should be. So much for a cheap solution.

They do a wet test also? you Squirt some light oil in the the Cylinder and if the compression comes up it's the rings/cylinder wall. If the compression stays the same it the valves. Head work sound a bit simpler and cheaper than ring/cylinder/piston. Goodluck

Just an update....if you EVER get a low compression code and it turns out to be bent valves, get ride of the car. It's been two weeks since my car has been in the shop and it's going to cost over 2G's. Unless you have the time, space and know how to do it yourself, trade it in.

Are they just replacing the 6 valves or all of them? Any cam work? Stretched timing chain?

Well, they are working on the 4th week of fixing it. As far as I know, just the bent valves. Does it normally take a month to fix a Toyota engine?

The Pontiac place got the valves done at a shop, but they didnt know how to shim the valves at the Pontiac place,so they took it to the Toyota place. Then they said they had to buy new head bolts, which is true because you cant reuse them and they were on back order. Now, the shims they got, half of them were the wrong size, so now they had to get more of them which will be this monday or tuesday, but I'm not holding my breath.

I'm not impressed with Toyota or their engines. Not at all. :x

I'm sorry to hear that, Dope, that really sucks. I think the main issue here though was just inept service. It's really annoying to hear about the shims, though, because I'm thinking of doing upgraded cams in my 1ZZ and I never even thought that I might just get sent the wrong ones!

Of course, it could be the toyota place screwing around since it's a vibe. It just doesnt take a month to fix 6 valves. I may sick the BBB on them.

Ok, end of week #4 and still no car. I'm being screwed with. What are my options right now? BBB? Lawyer? Calling Toyota HQ and complaining? Continue being screwed with? What?

Or does it normally take this long to fix a Toyota engine? I've had nothing but GM engines before and none ever took a dump like this.

Good article on what to do in your situation: http://www.tundraheadquarters.com/blog/ ... em-solved/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I'm sure much of the issue is GM is a buffer between them and you at the moment and they aren't really motivated to please GM. They are, however, motivated to have you NOT call Toyota and complain. Skip the middleman and talk to the Toyota dealership and let them know you're willing to take that step if they don't move things along.
