cig lighter inst lights not working

Post by hotwire62 »

I have a 2005 vibe recently I went to plug in my phone charger ,and suddenly radio went off ,instrument panel lights and headlights went off, also had to use manual button to shift out of park headlights came on with manual switch but don't work automatically ,taillights and all other lights on outside work with manual switch, checked cig lighter fuse and inst panel fuse and several others and none are burned out , is there a relay I need to check and why did plugging my charger in dcause this I have been using it for weeks now.

My 2005 base did the same thing to me last month! I found two(2) blown fuses under the dash. 25 amp AM1, and 15 amp CIG. Assuming the cig fuse took out the AM1 fuse, I put a smaller 10amp fuse into the cig slot - it immediately blew! But the AM-1 fuse was ok.
I am still operating this way today. No radio power and no cigarette lighter power. Replacing the AM1 fuse fixed all the important stuff. I will revive (revibe?) my thread asking for a wiring diagram for the cig lighter circuit.
good luck

ps, I was also plugging in my phone at about the time my power went out - sounds like a short circuit in the cig plug!

Pull the AM1 fuse and check continuity! Replacing my blown AM1 fuse fixed the same problems you listed!

O.K I must be blind , I checked the am1 again and it was plainly blown , i guess i had looked at it from too close up before ,this time I stood up andlooked at it and it was obvious , and everything seems to be working including the radio. Thank you so much.

You're Welcome! But I am concerned about your cigarette lighter socket. You and I both blew the AM1 fuse by using the cig lighter! I would suggest you not use your cig lighter again unless you are in a good place to pull over and replace another fuse. Should also carry spare AM1 fuses.
IN MY CASE, my cigarette lighter circuit is still shorted - I have no radio or cig lighter. I am looking for a wiring diagram and warmer weather to work on it.
Good luck,
