New to the forum. Bought a 2009 2.4, 5 speed, 17 inch wheels when they were closing them out. Great deal...I think 13,500. Then I deployed and loaned the car to my Dad. 60K later I finally get it back. So I need tires...thanks Dad. Guess its payback for the bazzillon gallons of milk he bought. Any way does anyone know if I can stuff 235/55/17 on this thing. I just bought 3 brand new ones from a guy on CL for 125. I'll go buy the forth retail, if they fit. The stock tires 215/45/17 bring the car kinda low anyway. And I have a speed hump in front of my house the has vibe tracks all over it. So I was hoping the 55s would give me a little more ground clearance. But I am not sure if the 235s will be too wide. thanks for any help. BTW Merry Christmas Gen Vibe users. Peace be with you.
That's a pretty huge increase, but if your car still has stock springs they might be okay.
I am running 225/50-17 on the stock alloy 17" wheels and I am lowered about 2 inches on Tein H-Tech springs. I only get interference at the front in low speed, tight turning situations. Just a bit of rubbing on the inner fender and only when backing up. (When I had the stock tires I had no rubbing issues despite being lowered).
I went a size wider up to try and protect my rims a bit from curbing and a bit taller to try and get a bit more cushion in the sidewall and try to better my mpg. However, the mpg has suffered about 2 mpg, I suppose due to the increased drag from wider tires.
My tires are 4.8% larger in over all diameter. That exceeds the normal recommendation of not going over 3%. Frankly, I've not noticed any braking or handling issues. Your proposal is a whopping 9.43% larger. The stock sidewall is about 96.52mm and your proposed size is 129.03mm, which is 32.5mm larger. That is a lot. It certainly should help fill up the wheel arches!
It isn't that expensive, and since you have invested some money into this already with the tire purchase, maybe you should just have the shop mount the tire and then put it on the front and test it out, then put it on the back and test it there too. Drive around a bit and see if you get any noise. The shop might refuse to do this if they know what kind of car you are driving. If you have a second car I'd just take the wheel/tire off and take it down there and with the new tire and have them do it, then put it on yourself at home and test it out for fitment.
Good luck!

The 235 width is probably ok, but the 55 is a bit tall. I have 235/40/18's on my 10 GT. You can play with the different sizes on the Miata tire size calculator you can find on Google. That way you can see exactly how much taller the tire is over stock. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply all. Hopefully I'll get a response from someone who has done this. I can have the tire mounted at our auto hobby shop on Ft Carson. And give it a try. I'm not worried about the expense of the tires. They are brand new with the stickers still on them. I priced them out at about 125 each on tirerack. I only gave 125 for all three. So I'm sure I can get my money back out if it doesnt work.
How much more clearance do you need? I have a set of rims/tires I bought off a guy with a Forrester with 225-55-17's on them and they rubbed the fender liner like crazy. I run 10% shorter 225-45-17 in summer and have never had issues scraping anything lowered 1.75".
Keep in mind running a taller tires will make your speedometer and odometer incorrect
