Messing with stock intake

Post by Geo »

Ok, I can't decide on any sort of intake right now because of the whole "Will it fit the SC" thing.Instead, I'm messing with the stock one All I did right now was re-route the stock intake under the battery tray, I had to remove the staples from the end of it, take off the pastic inlet, turn it around and secure it. Pretty simple. I figure hot air rises, and there's more air movement around where it is now, so it'll get colder air than being in that original spot. What I plan on doing once I have some more money is replacing all the piping from the airbox on, and using PVP piping to run a ~3" diameter tube from the bumper area to the airbox itself. Won't quite be ram-air, but more air and colder air at that. I love tinkering with things like this (damn, I should really be an engineer!) so if you are going to tell me I am wrecking my car and should be shot, do it in a nice way so as to not hurt my feelings Here's a engine shot:There are also 4 holes in the plastic pipe right before it enters the airbox, I plugged those up as well with red tape, don't want any of this 5º cooler air escaping now, do I? Comments welcome, as are suggestions as to how to improve this design ^_^

Be careful of water being sucked up when you reroute to the bumper area...

However, if I do suck up droplets of water (no way it'll get anything else) the paper filter will take care of that quickly

All depends on how you aim the tube...if you aim it straight out the vents, a good puddle will load up the tube...if you aim it straight down, less of a chance. I think your best bet is to keep it sideways...or even aim it towards the back of the car...Then again, you could just get an Injen when they release the new version...then if the S/C comes out, just cut some of the tube off where it attaches to the throttle body, and get a longer rubber connetor thing...that is flexible enough to go from the new throttle input to the tube...know what I mean?

(reasons stated in previous threads) There isn't a whole lot of room in that thing to actually CUT, so I figure spend the little bit of $$$ i need to do the PVC thing, and then see what happens after the SC comes out. (Besides, I would also rather support a company that is directly making products for our cars, enough of these Matrix hand-me-downs )I got a few more days to plan things out, hopefully I can figure something for this weekend :D

I cut the stock intake tube just out side the air box and attached 3" flex tubing to it and ran it to the bumper near the fog light. With the TRD filter and cold air from the bumper it has helped low end power quite a bit. Maybe not as much as a CAI but still an improvement! The stock tubing is very restictive and sucks in HOT air.

shibaman: Where did you place the end of the 3" tubing? Where I have mine going, or where the normal CAI filters are placing their filters?Notice any change in sound?

I ran it down into the bumper area. It is about 3" above the fog light. It is in about the same area as a CAI filter would be. It sounds good but not too noisy. When Injen has a legal fittment I may get one. For now this will work. Good improvement in performance!

A K/N Typhoon will work great in the winter but in the summer it will suck in hot air which will hurt the performance. For me in Ca. only a CAI would be worth the $. There is a differance of 15-20 * between the location of the air box and the bumper area.

GET A CAI. I would get the AEM just to be different and i like theirs a little more . If anything, it will need to be cut down. you can cut the cai shorter and put the filter on where you cut it when they come out with SC.
