2004 Vibe Check Engine Light P0741

Post by concretejungle »

Hello, Happy Thanks giving all.

I recently purchased a 2004 Vibe with just about a lil over 100k miles. The day I purchased the car, the test drive was great and even paid a local mechanic to go over the vehicle, in which he gave a positive report. Well, to my dismay, the day I drove the car home, the check engine light came on  . I got the light read at Autozone and it came back with the following code:

P0741
Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid Circuit Performance or Stuck off. Pending.

After doing some research online, it looks like I'm not the only one who's having the issue. The issue that concerns me is that there could be multiple causes for the error and it could get rather expensive fixing one item and having the CEL come on again. The transmission runs smoothly and haven't noticed any problem with it as of yet. The fluid was checked and appears to be normal. I already called the dealer I bought the car from and he told me to bring it in this weekend so he could look at.

Has anyone here ever ran into this issue and have any recommendations? Is this transmission or car doomed for failure? I must say that this has me stressing being that this happened on day 1 of ownership!

As I recall, this issue is merely for an electronic solenoid on the outside of transmission itself. You might also just need to have the transmission fluid changed. Did the vehicle come with maintenance records?

Sadly, the car didn't come with any maintenance records since the dealer said none came with the car when bought from the auction. From reading online, some people have been having that code come back eventually after replacing pcm, solenoid, and torque convertor. I'm just hoping that this will be a one time fix and not have the issue with CELs coming on/off. I already had that fun with a 06 Bmw 328i :? Thanks for the recommendation, this weekend I'll be sure to swap out the transmission fluid. Even though I bought the car as is, I'm hoping the dealer will be willing to make right to this issue. I can't even get the car inspected without getting rid of the CEL first.
