Cosmo Racing SRI on a 2008 Vibe

Post by gigman »

I installed a Cosmo Racing SRI on my otherwise stock base model, and after a short time the "check engine" light came on. The code stated the issue was with the performance of the MAF sensor. I double checked all the connections and fittings, and erased the code, thimking the PCM was just recognizing the change. It came back on again, and it was suggested to me that I clean the sensor with the appropiate cleaner. I've yet to do that, but I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem. My Vibe is running great, and I'm not having any performance or running issues, whatsoever.

Try unplugging the battery for 10 minutes, and then trying it out after that. I believe that will "reset" the PCM and it'll adjust itself to the values with the CAI. People recommend installing the CAI with the battery unplugged for this reason, if I'm not mistaken.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I have done that. The battery had to come out, initially, to remove the stock air box, so the install was done with battery disconnected. When the CEL came on at first, I did what you suggested, and it went out for a while, then came back on. That's when I plugged in a code reader, and got "P0101/ Mass or volume air flow circuit range/performance". The light went out on it's own, when the ambient temperature here in Western New York, briefly went above 50 degrees, then came back on when it got cold again(in the 30's). Could it be related to the air temperature so cold, combined with the increased air flow? I did clean the MAF sensor, but that didn't work, either. Maybe I can only use this set up in the summer!

I wonder. There have been talks about changing the intake manifold gasket at the same time as doing the CAI, because it can expose an issue there, but your vibe is still pretty young, not to mention I have no idea what code that would throw...

Today, I removed the SRI, and reinstalled the stock set up. The CEL went out on it's own, so I know the Cosmo was the issue. I'll put it back in next spring, and see what happens. Meanwhile, I'm sure gonna miss that awesome howl the intake made! I've made quite a few other mods to my Vibe, but I can't post any photos of her, because the pictures are to big to transfer, and I don't no how to make them smaller ( just call me the Elmer Fudd of electronic social media!). Any advice on that matter?

Use a website like imageshack.com, and upload your photos. Then click the "Img" button at the top of the reply box and copy the "Direct Link" from your picture, between the tags. It should look like [ Img]YOUR LINK HERE[ /Img] but without the spaces in the brackets. Voila!

Thanks, H.W. I'll give that a try, and hopefully, post them in the GenVibe Garage forum. See you there!

The Intake Mainfold gasket is for the older 1zz 03-05 vibe/matrix/corolla and you would get a P0171, lean code. The P0101 only came on when you had the SRI on? Since you put the stock air box back on no CEL? That would lead to think you don't have the MAF clocked correctly in the SRI. In other words it maybe sideway or backwards in the air stream, which also could mean a defect with MAF mounting bracket on the SRI itself.
