How to change the Air Intake Manifold Gasket

Post by Daiji »

I got the dreaded P0171 error recently and I have been taking steps to try to fix the issue. I recently cleaned my Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF) and I cleaned it again this time to be sure. The next cheapest fix that I had read on the forums was that it could be the Air Intake Manifold Gasket leaking. Since it was about $7.50 from the Toyota dealer, I thought it was best to attempt next. I couldn't find a great write up with any pictures so I thought I would document my attempt to replace it on my 2005 Pontiac Vibe. I don't know if everyone else has the same motor that I do, or that the steps will be the same but hopefully it can help someone save some time and/or hassle.

I am including some quotes I found from other threads that might prove helpful. At least they were helpful to me.
Felpro has a gasket (MS 93942) for ~$5 at Advanced Auto Parts
I found the Toyota part number is : 17171-22060 and it is the orange/rust colored one I have been seeing in pics
I can't seem to find the pdf from Toyota saying it was a known issue and how to fix it.

Tools are pretty straight forward:
Socket Wrench
10mm & 12mm sockets
6" socket extension
Adjustible pliers if you feel so inclined

1) First step is to take off the cover, pretty straight forward, 2 threaded nuts and 2 nylon rivets. Don't forget a nice cup of hot coffee while you work. You can perch it precariously on top of the battery.

2) I undid the two nuts holding the wiring track in place and rotated them up and out of the way. I also took off the hose clamps on the far right for the rigid hose section as well as 4 bolts that hold the manifold to the engine. The silver aluminum block in the bottom right has a few hoses attached but the one I tried to remove had fluid in it and made a small mess. I think it was transmission fluid? Anyway, remove as few hoses as possible, I called out the ones I took off and the ones I left.

3) I swung this hose out of the way upwards.

4) Here is the new gasket from the Toyota dealer. Its orange like all of the other posts mentioning it call out. Note that there are tiny tabs on one side in the long direction. Those go in the small slots on the manifold that match the old one that you pull off.

5) I pulled the Manifold off the engine and rotated it clockwise. This allowed me to get to the gasket that is attached to the black plastic that provides the seal between the manifold and the engine.

6) Turns out my old gasket was in good shape but I went ahead and replaced it anyway. I figured it wasn't worth wasting an hours work and a $7.50 part. When I pulled it off, it detached a small hose in the back that I called out. Sadly when I put it back on I missed this connection because I didn't know it had come lose and my engine ran terribly and it would barely hold an idle. I thought I had royally messed up my engine. Luckily I tore everything down again and found this mistake and corrected it.

7) Here is the new gasket in place and another shot of the hose that I mistakenly left unattached originally.

8) Everything else goes back on in reverse order. Sadly since my gasket was not the cause of my P0171 Check Engine Light code (CEL) I get to tackle the next possible cause which is either O2 sensor or Spark Plugs. I figure I can replace both of them for the cost of taking it to the shop to have it looked at.

Nice write up and welcome to genvibe.

When I replaced my intake gasket, I forgot to hook up one of the air hoses to the intake. Made the car run very, very poorly

any update on fixing your P0171?

Yeah, no luck. The CEL actually went away with a slightly warmer weather. I am getting a little vibration in the engine at idle and pretty poor mileage on my last tank though so I think sparkplugs are next. We will see.
