Looking for new tires

Post by harryb »

I have a 2006 base Vibe with 98,000 miles. Tires are the standard 205 55r16. I'm on my second set of Goodyear Eagle RSAs - these have about 48,000 miles on them, tread depth of 3/32. One tire is a Cooper Lifeliner GLS, because I tore up a tire and couldn't get another Goodyear at the time, that tire is about a year old, about 15,000 miles.

I plan on keeping the car, so I don't want a cheap, 40K tire like a Douglas. I also don't want to spend a fortune on tires. I had planned on just putting the Eagle RSA back on there, but I wanted to see what others have done. Advice?

Thanks,
Harry

You will find very little love for the RS-A here.

Personally, after mine were toast, I got some rims and used the steelies for winter. Although not cheap, both summer and winter tires are leagues better at everything than the RS-A's. I wouldn't know what to suggest for an all season tire.

I'm not a fan of Goodyear tire products. I had some Riken Raptors and they were very good and had about 50K on them. I just replaced them with some Bridgestone Ecopia 422. So far they ride better and quieter than the Raptors and should give me better MPGs. The only down side is that the side walls are not as stiff and hard cornering isn't as crisp.

What about something like the hankook v4? Just search for a regular-looking all season tire. Discount tire direct has lots of options with the mileage ratings listed. I've found they're usually the cheapest online option.

I assume you're located somewhere that you don't need snow tires?

I should have added that I don't need summer and winter tires - here in Mississippi, we don't have to worry about snow and ice. If we do get that stuff, we just stay home!

Hankook V4's work very well rain or shine! And unlike the RS-A's, the V4's are almost impossible to get to hydroplane!!!

I like that! And the price looks good, I may just go with the Hankooks.
