New stereo install. Do I need $130 module?

Post by sunshy »

Hello All, I love the stock stereo in my 09 Vibe, but the time has come to replace it for something with some current features (Pioneer DEH-P9400BH). I called a few install places and got prices--mostly about $260 installed. However, one guy told me that I need a special "module" that is part of the stock stereo that, when removed, will have to be replaced for the car to work with an after-market stereo. I googled it and found this:

http://www.installer.com/item/display_i ... MOS-LAN-01" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Is this correct? I'd hate to go to a place that quoted me $260 only to find out that I also need the $130 module and will have to come back when it's in to finish the install. Is the guy correct or is he trying to rip me off? Please let me know any experiences with after-market stereo installations. Thanks!

I dont think you absolutely have to have it. But your door chimes and a few other things such as onstar run through the harness that connects to the radio. Research what exactly you would lose and if those dont matter then dont worry about it.

However if you buy the radio from crutchfield i know they can give you a sweet deal on the $130 adapter. I think mine was like 50 from crutchfield.

OK, the crutchfield site says I need it also. :( Going to give them a call to double check. Thanks for the info.

You only need the harness if you want to retain OnStar. Being that the car isn't a true GM product the door chimes etc, don't go through the radio. If the car is non Moon & Tunes (no factory subwoofer) you can get away with using Scosche's GM18b adapter. You'll need to move 1 wire in the harness, as it doesn't line up with the correct wire on the car's harness. Thanks for the link. I'm going to have the installer try this with the Aveo harness.
