Problem with Vents

Post by biglarrythree »

Hey guys -

Ive searched the forums, and found out that a lack of airflow thru the interior vents can be a variety of things. I wanted to post my issue and get some perspective.

I started my car Saturday and the ac was already on. The fan under the hood was going, and the ac light was also lit on the dash. However NO air was flowing from any of the vents. I turned it off and back on, still no air.

Oddly, as I was driving around, the vents magically started to work out of no where, at all speeds. But the next time I turned the car off and back on, no airflow. But this morning it was working again. It is now making a quiet humming noise as well. Any ideas on what this might be? Could it be a fuse? Or a resistor? or the motor? I dont want to pay a mechanic hundreds of dollars when I can do it myself. Thanks!

(On a side note, when the vents are not working, if you hold your hand up to a vent, you can feel the faintest of air coming thru it, and if the ac is on, its cold, and if the heat is on, its warm....weird!!!)

Thanks!

There is a blower sort of behind the glove box. When you are not getting any airflow, does it sound like that blower is running? Does it change the sound when you switch the fan speed between the lowest and the highest settings?

Some people have had those blowers go bad, where sometimes they run, sometimes they don't, sometimes a kick or a hard pothole can jar them enough to run again. Don't know if that is the problem though.

If it only runs on the highest fan setting, then that is almost always a problem with a "blower resistor", which is cheaper and easier to replace then the entire blower.

Ok I went out on my lunch break and messed around a little. No matter what speed I set it on it sounds the same. But I just made a discovery. I reached underneath my glove box area, closer to the middle console area, and gave the dash a good whap underneath. Low and behold, the air started to immediately work. The other day when it came on, could it be possible I hit a bump and something happened to make it work as well? What could me the main issue seeing how when I hit the dash underneath, the vents magically work? Thanks again.

Is this the correct part I need to purchase in order to replace the dying ventilation?

My son's car is doing the exact same thing. Turn on the AC and about 50% of the time there is no air blowing. For some reason, the blower motor, that you posted a link to, is not able to start turning. What I've done is take out the glove box, unclip the cabin air filter cover and remove the filter. Then you can reach down inside the vent box and manually turn the squirrel cage on the fan motor and it will start turning if the AC and fan switch are on.

Replacing the fan should work OK. I'm buying this one which is a bit cheaper with shipping, for the same part.
