MICE in the intake!

Post by djkeev »

First off......this is a daily driver, maybe a day here or there when it doesn't roll but it's a 2007 with 110,000 mikes on it.

Was doing routine stuff today, tire pressures, oil and filter change, fluid top offs, etc. I know that the air filter only has about 10,000 miles on it but thought that it won't hurt to look at it.

Image

I popped the cover off and on top of the air filter lie two dead baby mice! How did they get on top?!?!?
Yes I know I said two but one fell off!
Image

The air box was full of seed pods and two more dead mice! Ewwwww!
Turning the filter over, they chewed their way through the air filter!

Image

Fortunately the air box cover has a secondary filter before the MAF sensor so nothing made it into my intake and combustion chamber but a few stray small particles!

Image

I guess the moral is that mice move in quickly! Be aware and check for them. They crawled through the intake pipe located in front of the battery.......

So, while I had it apart I cleaned the MAF sensor, cleaned things up, put in a new air filter and all is well. Also changed the cabin air filter, don't remember the last time I did that!

Wow! Definitely not something you'd expect to find in a daily driver ! At least they didn't make it any further then the intake. Poor little baby mice .

Yeah, you're not a kidding when you said that those mice move quick. Back a few decades ago, I worked at a small manufacturing plant and it was your typical job shop, not very clean and mice running around every now & then. On one Monday morning we all showed up and proceeded to put our lunch in the refrigerator. Well whoever was the first one to open the door that morning probably soiled their garments. A baby mouse jumped out and ran for cover. It crawled inside the fridge through a very small opening in the drain. It then helped itself to a feast of leftovers and got so big that it couldn't get out  until the door was opened that morning.

Another time we came in, again on a Monday morning, and found a Big Mac container (the older Styrofoam type from 20+ years ago) which was in an office trash bin, and a momma mouse had a litter of baby mice in the container. Scared the crap out of us when we heard strange noises coming from the trash. Oh well, good thing the Vibe has DOUBLE layers of protection. :)

^^We had some in my wife's cabin filter. 3 dead baby mice. And getting at that cabin filter (G35X) is a REAL pain!

Excuse me while I go hide in a corner and cry hysterically in revulsion. I'd put a screen over the AC intake as my next mod if I wasn't certain that mice can still chew through it :(

Mice are some destructive little devils. I had friend years ago who had a '48 Chevy Fleetline that he had parked for the winter. The following spring he reinstalled the battery and the car would not start. He started checking things and found out mice had moved into the dashboard and chewed all the wiring up. I've also heard of them getting into seats too. Nasty little buggers.
