I am surprised nobody finds that roller rocker arms with built-in needle bearings and hydraulic valve lifters is not interesting compared to shim and buckets!
Technically they are hydraulic valve lash adjusters, and that is what you would check and replace if necessary. I think Toyota's 3.5 liter has a similar design. I wonder if the new 2.5 liter is like this. Toyota's 1.8 Atkinson cycle engine is probably like this also.
The 2zz-ge had rocker arms with the lift change mechanism (slipper follower controlled by ecu and oil pressure), but no hydraulic valve lash adjuster, just mechanical shim and bucket type (or lash cap for adjustment) design. Someone please correct me if wrong. I will have to verify the actual design of the 1zz-fe, but always assumed it was mechanical shim and bucket type, without rockers, using varying thickness of lifters instead of actual shims, and camshaft removal being necessary. There might of been evolutionary changes throughout the years that differs from my understanding.
This is what they look like, especially when something goes wrong. Possible valve float (or is it rocker arm float) causing the rocker arms to pop off because of sudden rpm spike due to a missed shift or accidental downshift.
