A/C issue

Post by tksaturn »

Good morning, everyone out there in Pontiac Land!I have an issue with which I can use help.I have an 03 Vibe GT, 108000 miles. My a/c quit working, so I pulled it into my friend's shop to get the r134 charged(I've had the car 4.5 years and have never done it. thought it was time). Turns out, my car has a full charge, yet for some reason, my compressor does not seem to want to cycle on. The fuse for it is good. Does that mean it's compressor time? Thanks in advance for all the advice and input.

Lots of AC issues popping up recently! First you need to troubleshoot it a bit more. It may just need the clutch on the compressor changed, or the low pressure switch may need to be replaced, both easier and cheaper than a complete compressor. Try to turn the compressor manually, it should turn freely. If it does, I doubt the compressor is bad, it is just not getting the electrical signal to turn on.If you have a multimeter, check the clutch coil plug at the compressor for 12v with the AC on. If you don't have 12v, then you can check the low pressure switch which is plumbed into the lines somewhere. I haven't looked on a Vibe, but I've worked on my Mustang and Villager van and a few other cars, and it is usually somewhere on the refrigerant lines from the dash to the compressor/ condenser. You can jump the switch with a piece of wire inserted into the wiring harness connecting the two sides and if the compressor comes on, the switch is bad.Your friend should be able to check all of this if he has basic AC knowledge and give you a firm diagnosis. But if not, it is pretty easy to figure out yourself.Good luck!
