Raer Brake noise

I have 81k on my 05 AWD. Getting a rattling metal sound SOMETIMES ONLY when braking. My kids say they hear it clearly in back...much more than me in front. Similar to a "penny rolling or ziipers on jacket sound in the DRYER". Rear brakes on these normally go way beyond 100k. I did check the rear wheel play(bearings)...jacked up w/o parking brake on = no play. ... so any ideas or known problems before I tear it apart?

I had relative with 2007 vibe with rear drum brakes happen same thing, it was chunks of rust got loose, they don't have anyway of getting out, you have to take drums off and clean it all out. most likely you don't have to bother replacing shoes.Hope this helps.

WOW, Before reading you reply, that's exactly what I found. The drum edge that is under the "LIP" of the backing plate just needed to wire wheel it. One less major worry...Thanks

I am glad that is all it was, you know those are drums so anything bigger then 1/8 of an inch cant fall out if it gets lose.

I'm having this problem on my 2006, couldn't figure out what it was, glad i found this thread. I might just replace the rear drums as they are quite rusty all around. Going to take it to a shop tomorrow or the next day, cant do it myself. No tools where I'm living, and its an apartment.

Getting the rear drums off can be an issue. The easily will rust to the hubs and you cannot hammer or tap on the edges to get them loose. They do have two threaded holes for the purpose of removing them, near the center. You use two 8mm x 1.25 pitch bolts about 30mm long (1Â¼ inch long) THREADED FULL LENGTH and screw them in the holes in the drums. This forces the drum off the hub, then you can clean the hub and drum center and put a thin film of grease on the hub to keep it from rusting again. Save the bolts for the next time.

Got this looked at, my right rear drum was seized, replaced both drums and cables to emergency brake, along with new spark plugs, car drives MUCH better now.
