2003 1ZZ-FE Belt Tensioner - Gates aftermarket replacement durability

Post by 455SD »

OK, so I finally got around to replacing the "growling" belt tensioner, in my daughters Vibe. After much debate about which manufacturers part to use, I decided to go with the Gates unit. I would have loved to put OEM back on, but hard to justify the extra money. So, now we'll see how this unit holds up. I'll check back in from time to time, and update the miles.

I actually need to do this as well in my 03 Vibe w/ 1ZZ-FE.Belt is starting to get a few cracks and the tensioner is making the noise. How long did it take you to do? Was it the tensioner itself or just the pulley that went bad on yours?I'm thinking I can just replace the pulley on mine, as I'm planning on replacing the belt at the same time, picked up the goodyear gatorback belt.

It took me about 30 minutes to swap out the whole tensioner assembly. The vibration dampner (shock), was leaking on hers, and would only make the noise when put into reverse. I went with a Dayco belt. Not a hard job to do at all.

Did you have to jack up the engine? I heard you have to do this in order to clear a bolt.

Yes, you have to take the front mount - or passenger side loose, and carefully jack the front of the engine up. I used a 12" long piece of 2 x 12, and a floor jack, placed evenly across the front of the oil pan. You will only need to raise the front up, so that the bolt will just clear. You must be careful not to damage the pan.
