Yep that's will cause it and it's a common problem. Running lean will cause bad thing to happen to the valves and top end of the engine. I've never done it but it's a $30 part and not that hard of a job.

p-0171.dealing with it. I already planned to use Techron (concentrate plus) fuel system cleaner first. But today Auto Zone had 2 for 1 and that cinched the deal. Then my friendly ,honest ,shady tree mechanic will change the intake manifold gasket.Question = reconfirming what I think I read on a searched post. Can I buy a scanner and erase the "CEL" whenever it appears and the Vibe will suffer no consequences??

False. The issues is still there but they take time to pop up a again as a CEL. Some Readers will show "Pending" codes but the CEL isn't on. That means if it sees the issues again in so much run time (or start cycles) it'll turn on the CEL. P0420 are notorious for coming and going.

You may want to try cleaning the MAF first, this is also a common cause of P0171, it requires very little labor and you can buy MAF cleaner or use Brake clean -Don't use carb clean!!!--Frank
