I recently noticed on my 2006 Vibe that there are spots on the roof where the paint is bubbling in what looks to be rust coming through from underneath the paint.I have 4 spots on the roof where this is happening. Does anyone else have this happening or has had it happened?Should this be considered normal? What suggestions could you give me for this? Thanks
Are they chips? If it's toward the front half, it's very normal. Rock chips that are out of your normal line of sight. That is until you get up on a step ladder to wash and wax like I did a few weeks ago and discovered I had some work to do in the rust removal department. Mine were very premature and not bubbling, but a nice orange/brown hue inside chips just a bit bigger than a pen ballpoint. That's all it takes, undetected, to get a bubble going. I took Q-Tips, slightly dipped with some rust remover product, along with all-purpose cleaner and extra Q-tips to remove extra product. Be careful with that stuff, it can ruin paint if left on. I didn't have touch-up paint, so I filled the hole with clear coat on the end of a saturated Q-tip again. Need that solution to hold until I get more touch-up paint. I lost mine some how this spring. If you don't need something as aggressive as rust remover gel, you can try a very small amount of compound a Q-tip and try to get at it that way. Of course, all of this advice/suggestion will be moot if you have bubbles and no visible chip. I sure hope it's not rusting from underneath.
Yes I had a couple chips which I have touched up fine. It is actually bubbling under the paint or bubbling in the paint. I have four spots. 3 in the front half and one at the back near the antenna.I looked at a couple other Vibes in the parking lot at work today and both had the same things on their roofs. Although I only saw one spot on the one and two on the other. I can't believe that this would be normal.I called the dealership and they said it is likely not covered as it is past warranty. They said they could look at it, but I would assume they will suggest repainting the roof.
