2009-2010 factory radio Volume and tune buttons that break

Hello,I have been reading that the volume and tune buttons on the 2009-2010 factory radio's break easy.Is it just a case of the knob breaking off so that when the knob is removed the radio can be used with ether a replacement (aftermarket or one from a donor radio) knob or with no knob just turning the metal shaft?Also If i was to ever replace the radio with another factory radio, would I have to have the dealership program the replacement radio to my VIN/car?Thanks
