Some front panel lights out - looking for ideas

Post by wintersilke »

Morning,Got a question that is stumping me atm.The illumination for the gear shift (P, R, N, D, D2, D1) as well as the illumination for the radio (factory model, single CD/AUX, FM/AM only) has failed. The radio works fine, you just cannot see the clock or the channel you are on.The gear shift light is not on, so when it is dark outside, you cannot see what gear you are in.Looking at the fuse's list, I don't see anything that would correspond to this problem.Would a single wiring harness clip control both illuminations? Perhaps it has come loose? I had not taken the panels off yet to look for it before I starting fishing for ideas here.

http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=14014 was very helpful for the gear shift light.Regarding the bulbs, the link for the radio tells what kind of bulb to use. Did anyone id the bulb for the gear shift? I didn't see that info in the gear shift light links.

Hello. I own a 2003 Vibe base model with automatic, 106,000 miles, a few days ago experienced failure of the gear shift selector bulb, son mentioned he could not see what gear he was in. I spent an hour or so this morning looking through this site and located this thread. It was easy to remove the P-R-D-2-L piece from the housing. Went to Advance Auto and purchased Sylvania 74LL ($4.99 + tax for package of 2) and saw the bulb was a pull-out as opposed to socket or other. Removing the old bulb was a bit difficult, I tried needle-nose pliers with foam on the end but they kept slipping off. Then tried tweezers but they kept slipping. Then back the the needle-nose with a thin piece of plastic tubing around the bulb and out she came. New one in quickly, a bit of fuss getting the P-R-D-2-L back in place (kept shifting around when I ran through the gears) but all working again. One of the threads showed how to remove the dashboard panel, do not remove anything dashboard related to change this bulb. Also found this link on the matrix web site with great photos.

Next fix if I so choose to accept the challenge is the HVAC door. About 18 months ago I disconnected the plug to eliminate the tapping. So no cabin recirc on mine. I've read through the forums many times but just can't quite bring myself up to starting.
