2009 Vibe ->Little Storage Compartment on left side of steering? Part number?

Post by caz5512 »

Hi,My dad decided to wash my 2009 Vibe while I was on the lake with my kids. He also wanted to top of my fluids. Nice of him...but he mistook the little storage box on the left side of the drivers seat/steering wheel for the hood release! I believe that compartment is designed as a small storage area for loose change (tolls, etc?) but I could be wrong. In any case, the plastic latch holding it up broke and now the damn thing just hangs open (actually, it is holding with duct tape at the moment). Is this easy to replace? Part number? I never use it, so I guess I could superglue it...but if it is a 4$ part to change, I would rather do that.If nobody knows what I am talking about, I will post pictures tonight. Thanks

I know exactly what you're talking about! I keep my garage door opener in there.Compartment door (#15 in illustration): #19204959 - MSRP: $56.49 / GMPD: $32.84You may want to check out car-part.com to find some junkyards near you. I bet a junkyard wouldn't charge more than $5.00 for this part. 09-10 Matrices should have this same part, so you could check junkyards for Vibes and Matrices.

I recall looking at the cover, assuming it hid fuses and never giving it a second thought. I already have a place for everything so I have nothing to put in there.

Who would put a "hook" down there where your shoelaces can get tangled up in Were there some FEMALE engineers involved in the designing of the 2nd gen Vibes? OOPPPS ... I opened up a can of worms on this one Will have to look into this one when I get back home to the Vibes

I think it would be pretty hard for anyone to get their shoe laces tangled up on something that's that high off the floor . It's supposed to be a hook that you can hang a grocery bag, etc. on so it doesn't fall over. I've personally never used it since groceries always go in the cargo area or on the floor behind the front seats, but it's just one more little thing that's pretty neat and useful about our beloved Vibes. Also, a little FYI for those of you who haven't noticed this neat little hook yet, just push on it and it will pop down and out. Push it back up and it tucks back away .

Now I think I recall seeing this small hook. Your "mirror image" snapshot was throwing me off as it looks to be coming from the drivers side and not the passenger side. I'm still going to look when I get back home tonight

Yes - like below and to the left of the glove box. It folds up so you might not notice it.

I think the previous owner of your Vibe must have salvaged a bunch of parts off of it before trading it in or something .Unfortunately it doesn't look like you can get just the hook. It looks like you would need to get that entire piece that it's a part of which costs $142.xx on GM Parts Direct . All I can suggest would be to check out local junkyards and see if you can get lucky and find an 09-10 Vibe and/or 09+ Matrix to get the hook from.Quote, originally posted by tpollauf »I agree BUT unfortunately my job requires me to drive THEIR service vehicle which, during these long HOT days, is almost the entire day This is why the Vibe is likely to be around for 20+ years and still have low miles on it I just hope many of you out there are also still around Yeah at the rate you're going, you'll have the Vibe forever ! I know about the little hook, just don't know what to do with it, and anyways, I never sit in the passenger seat! So it's up to my GF to find what to do with it!The little compartment on the left of the driver, I knew about it too, and like many here, I have no clue what to put in there! In the Mazda Protege, I put the sunglasses, but the Vibe has a sunglasses compartment in the roof! CDs, wires and all gadgets goes in the center console storage (it's huge!). I don't smoke, don't have a garage door opener.Same goes for the cargo organizer in the trunk... there's a couple of containers under the panels but I don't even know what to put in there! The only idea I have from you for any of the "bonus" containers is the little foldable bag from "ponta2147"... The Flip & Tumble.I never have those around when needed!I just LOVE to learn things about my car, but with the Vibe, it seems I know them all... I learned with previous cars to look and have an attentive eye to details and now I can find many things in one glance on other people's car that THEY didn't know about. One thing I learned on my Golf '96 from someone else was about the electric sunroof: If you forgot it open, you don't need to sit in the car with the ignition ON... you just needed to lock the door with the key from the outside and HOLD the key position and the sunroof would close while holding the key!Trust me, I TRIED it with the Vibe, thinking it was an intelligent addition (I like Volkswagen's innovations)... but to no avail! The only thing about the Vibe I know that is similar... if you turn off your car and remove the key, you have about 15 to 30 seconds of power to close your power windows... BUT, if you open any of the doors, the power shuts immediately.. my GF ALWAYS opens her door too fast, while I am closing the windows in the "power reserve"! X(Anyone has any "hideen tricks" or "accessories" they know on the Vibe?BTW: How do we "QUOTE" someone's posts around here? Thanks

Okay, so there is typing the tags and copying/pasting involved then? Not that I am lazy, but... well yeah... I guess I am then! But I use on a daily basis the HockeyBuzz.com forums and in there, they have the reply on the upper part of the thread, and when you reply from a user, you have the button "Quote" that does the same things as when you use the [ quote ] tag but automatically. I thought there was an "hidden trick" around here to have this done automatically.Oh well, I guess I should ask the administration around here to put this on the wishlist of the website! Pretty simple and quite handy I'm saying! Thanks for the info!

Just to add to the "hidden" things about the VIBE... did you know that on the 2009+, the POWER STEERING works even when the engine is not running?I read in the manual user and it's stated that if the engine fails while driving, the power steering remains active... so logically, the power steering pump must be electric instead of mechanic.

Buuut, is it the only steering assist, or there's also a classic mechanical oil pressured system? Is the electric steering assist only a backup in case of engine failure?

It brings good, and it brings bad. Gotta stick with it 'cause it aint gonna change!

It can steer the car by itself.... just punch the gas from a stop on some really rutted pavement with your hands off the wheel... Want to see what your Vibe is like without power steering? Simply unplug it and go for a drive! I think you'll be plugging it back in right away...

Want to see what your Vibe is like without power steering? Simply unplug it and go for a drive! I think you'll be plugging it back in right away... So, whenever the SensaTrac assist goes on, the steering is taken over? Since I had my "VSC" and "SENSATARC" + "CHECKENGINE" light lit up (already in another thread), I sometimes test the SensaTrac when leaving a stop. It's kind of nice what it does! You can really feel the difference when leaving a stop on a wet pavement... you still miss some traction, but it helps a lot not to overly spin out of control. Though it might be expensive to have and fix, those electronic assistance systems are neat.My cousin has something similar on his Hummer H3, steering assistance... I don't remember under what circumstances it would take over, but the car can litterally tell you to let go of the steering while it tries to correct something. For the no power steering, I can imagine what it's like! My '96 Golf had 2 broken belts under the hood at the same time... one totally broke, it was the power steering pump V belt, and the other one was the main belt that was half stripped. I had to drive the car for a day and a half without the power steering in order to get the part and replace it. When you drive at a reasonnable speed, you don't notice it much, but on a stop or at low speed, cornering is really hard! It's hilarious!

I never drive with the traction control or VSC on, it's way too annoying and gets in the way!The steering isn't taken over, it's just under no load from you (with your hands off the wheel) so it goes where the car wants to go! I'm curious to see what would hapen if you jacked the car off the ground and tried to push the wheels to turn from outside...

Re: 2009 Vibe ->Little Storage Compartment on left side of s

Post by alex_nrv »

I am asking this here, since this thread turned into some kind of "easter eggs" thread for the Vibes.

I have an ice scraper that came with the Vibe 2009, it was in the cargo modules/trap when I bought it used. The ice scraper is a thin plastic part, has notches and it look slike it could clide into something and snap into place for storage purpose. I searched all around the inside of the car for any slot where this scraper would fit in but couldn't find any.
Does anyone knows where it may go, if there is actually a place meant for it... ???

I can add a picture if needed so you can see how it looks if you don't have it yourself.

Thanks!

Since you bought your Vibe used, I'm betting the previous owner just forgot about the ice scraper. The Vibe never came with one from the factory, so there isn't an OEM designated spot for one.

I popped open the little storage compartment by accident while looking for the hood latch the second day I had my 2009 Vibe (like, last Friday). it's full of change! it doesn't rattle if you get enough coins in there. Looks like most of it is pennies, but there was a 2 Euro piece.

Ok then, thanks! I won't hope for a spot where it could fit in anymore and will throw it away! For the size and how it's made, it's not practical if I cannot slide it in something designed for it. A full size ice scraper fits really well in the cargo area.
I don't know where it came from, but it's clearly designed to fit/snap into something. Maybe it was a compact shovel with accessories attached to it.
Funny enough, this spring, I started cleaning and organizing stuff in the cargo area, and I remembered that there was a second module after the one where the spare wheel is... and I found an almost new snow brush that I had put in there (and forgot it was there) when i bought the car in april 2011.

I am trying to get to the discussion about adding a 12V socket to a center console on a 2005. My question is, do the solutions apply to a 2007? Also, the lid on my 2003 had a compartment in it. The 2007 lid does not. Are the lids interchangable?
