Long story as short as I can make it:Two weeks ago we were almost adopted by what I believed to be a Shepherd-Boxer mixed female dog. She showed up when I came home that Tuesday, and at first I thought she was a neighbor's dog so I tried to get her to go home. By Friday we had pretty much resigned ourselves to the fact that we had a new dog and that we were going to need food and other things for her.My wife left for work and to get food, dishes, collars, etc, but as she did the dog followed her out never to return. Fast forward to yesterday. We car-pooled and when I went to pick up Wendy in the afternoon, she had a box in her hands that was MEOWING!!! Keep in mind that Wendy has an allergy to pet dander... especially cats.I was not too happy, and even less so when I found out it was a male and black. Already been there/done that. None-the-less he is cute. Of course he is. He's a kitten, and apparently ours!!She told me the cat was free. Sure it was. And a quick $165 later @ Petco proved just how free he is. Add to that the neutering which is GOING to happen as soon as possible, and declawing, plus any other medical needs and this cat is surly free all right.Like I said, he is cute and we have him now. He slept with me last night and seems to be trying to get on my good side... of course he has... for now.Nicknames so far have been:Dexter; Dude!; Black Betty (a joke); "Lamont" (Ya' BIG dummy); Kid; Squeaky; Cat. Here we are NOT watching the Ranger's beat Atlanta last night (W6-2):He found a hiding place this morning in the afghan my mother made for me some 35yrs ago.WaddoUthink? Any suggestions welcomed.

Ah! I see someone got it.'Course that was me that came up w/that one, and frankly it just came out. I wasn't thinking about the song until later. That, and we keep wanting to call him "she." I would have preferred a female.

I have two black cats that adopted me... Jinx and Scaredy. Scaredy is named because she darts and spooks at everything. SHES supposed to be the scary one! Jinx is named because he was the only skinny stray thay hung around... Until I fed him, then he brought more...
I too have had both, together and separately. Generally, I prefer cats, but female cats. I had a really good female when I was growing up. She was a stray that followed me home at the age of 5. She lived 17yrs and was the BEST indoor/outdoor cat I have ever known. Good mouser and very little trouble. She stayed in the kitchen/laundry room when in the house and w/o using a barrier of any kind too. She just knew that's where she belonged. She was a smart one for that and many other reasons. Dogs are more work, and usually noisier, but I also understand the rewards of having a good dog.

Dogs are not more work...........they are a LOT MORE WORK. You might as well have another child. Unlike cats, they are very needy animals. Having had both as well, I prefer knowing I can go on vacation at any time and leave my cat(s) at home with as little as one visit a day from a local kid.As for a name for your cat: "Midnight"

I would always compare and the new cat would NEVER measure up.Though, my wife continues to ask about getting another cat.

I was trying to be kind to the many dog lovers we have here on this site and whom I respect and do not want to offend. I know they are much more work. Cats can be all right for a day or two left alone. Dogs? Well, we take care of our neighbor's two dogs (and two cats) when they are away, and while they aren't much trouble at all, they could not be left alone for two days w/o fresh food and water.

Sorry, but I don't think Nuisance is in the running... yet. They all get bigger and this one should be no exception. HPL, I'm a bit confused. What is meant by What are you referring to?

First off... I love that you're wearing your GenVibe shirt in the first picture ! Second off... I'm more of a dog person, but an animal lover in general and with that I say... that kitty is awfully cute! My name suggestion is in honor of Vibes... Abyss !I have only had one cat in my life, but he was the best cat ever. He was a neighbor's cat, but he started hanging out at our place so when we moved, we just took him with us! We would let him outside and he wouldn't leave the yard. He never scratched or bit anyone. As a matter of fact, a little neighborhood girl went up to him one day when he was eating and she lifted his (removed) up off the ground by the base of his tail. He didn't do anything except continue to eat. One time he got diarrhea during the night. He didn't have a litter box because he was an indoor/outdoor cat, so he went in the bathtub! He was an awesome cat. We have no idea how old he was, but we had him for quite some time and he was great. As someone else said, I wouldn't be against having another cat someday, except for the fact that I would be comparing it to Pokey and it would never stack up. R.I.P Pokey .

I wear my GenVibe T-shirt quite often. Considering how many times its been washed already it still looks like new! But I'm sure I'll wear it out long before my wife wears out hers. That's actually a pretty good suggestion (re: Abyss.) Could call him Abby for short. Wait! Isn't Abby a girl's name? Yeah, that's the hardest part of having one really good pet that dies. Replacement is never easy. I've had several cats and while one came close, most did not even come close to that first one as a good cat. We just got lucky, and I guess that's what it takes. Luck.

Our friends adopted a small black cat when it was just a baby that was abandoned (they do a lot of animal fostering, but this one became a permanent part of their home) and they call it LBFT (little black fuzzy thing). I think that's the funniest name ever!

Well he's a little cutie! We have three cats and two dogs (pugs) in our house right now (and a rabbit, but he stays in my sister's room) and I have to say, cats are less 'maintenance' but there's no replacing dogs. I do love both, but have a slight preference to cats because they are much more calm and won't go bananas if they hear the doorbell. Our (fat) black cat is named Gus.You could try a route similar to Frosty Jake's - AJ aka Abyss Jake. Or Patrick.

Thanks for all the suggestions, y'all. While its not yet cast in stone, its currently leaning toward Squeak/Squeaky, though I am still calling him Big Dummy/Dummy regularly. My wife suggested Stevie, in honor of one of my favorite Bluesman of all time. And B.B. (obvious), but it could also stand for Black Betty. I suppose we could also call him B.B.C. for black boy cat, or blues boy cat? There have been a coupla' votes for Dexter as well, but I have time.. until the wife gets impatient, which she does on a regualr basis. I'm more patient than that and will take what feels right with time.

Awww. I'm sorry Cole. I know how that is and its not fun at all. I've had to have two put down in my life. One was due to renal failure also. But its hard to see them in pain and know you can't do anything about it too.So sorry, Man.BTW: The name Squeak seems to have taken, and I found out his birthday is officially May 3rd, 2011... two day before my own. Two Tauruses in one house??? I had a girlfriend once who's b'day was May 3rd. It was a great, but rocky relationship.
